Action video dramatizes strength of
Fluke multimeters
Fluke Corporation has produced a fun animated video that makes an
important point. Using the Fluke 289 Industrial Trending Digital
Multimeter (DMM), busy facility maintenance professionals can collect
revealing system performance data without getting pinned down. The video
is set in a secret industrial complex. Mission: Capture 10,000
readings. Complete with ominous music and furtive figures darting
around heavy equipment, it shows how the Fluke 289 DMM can be attached
to a circuit and collect information, even while the operator is busy
elsewhere. In this case, dodging an armed security team.

Evolution of I/O Connections in
Computing
The last 50 years have brought about significant changes to
interconnect topologies, and input/output (I/O) connections on computers
are no exception. The evolution has taken us from very specialized
application-specific I/O connections to highly standardized,
miniaturized connectors and interconnects. This article by David
Pheteplace details I/O connections in computing.

New Edition of Foundation™
Fieldbus
ISA recently announced the release of Foundation™ Fieldbus,
3rd Edition by Ian Verhappen and Augusto Pereira. Ian Verhappen and
Augusto Pereira, control systems engineers with a high level of
experience involving Foundation Fieldbus installation, collaborate to
provide a reference for gaining knowledge on H1 protocol life cycle,
design considerations, installation tips, and commissioning. In addition
they provide operations and maintenance tips that can be utilized by
design engineers, control system engineers, and instrumentation
technicians. The third edition of Foundation™ Fieldbus has
expanded knowledge on network design by covering power distribution and
power supply requirements. It includes rules for cabling length,
documentation requirements, a commissioning checklist, topology
diagrams, system sizing formulas, and tips for integrating with other
systems. This helpful resource gives an explanation of the variety of
forms of Fieldbus Power Conditioners such as Fieldbus Intrinsic Safety
Concept (FISCO) coupled with a range of configuration and
troubleshooting tips.

Linear Magnetic Encoders for Harsh
Environments
HOFFMAN ESTATES, IL: New LM13 linear magnetic encoders bring big
performance to small spaces and tough applications. Consisting of only a
readhead and separate self-adhesive scale, the LM13 gives OEM designers
an ultra-compact package that's ideal for industry's toughest
applications in woodworking, metalworking, stone cutting, paper
converting, packaging, plastics processing, laser/flame/water-jet
cutting, chip/board production or assembly and packaging machinery.
Magnetic sensing delivers dependability in applications too dusty,
dirty, greasy or destructive for optical encoders. Engineered for
extreme service, LM13 encoders handle operating temperatures from
-10°C to 85°C, providing waterproof sealing to IP68 and high
resistance to shock, vibration and pressure. Frictionless operation
eliminates wear, while reducing system inertia and hysteresis for high
precision at high speeds and acceleration loads. --- Renishaw
Inc.

Magnetic Cylinder Sensors
SOUTHINGTON, CT: For automated equipment where piston position must
be closely monitored, Baumer Ltd has introduced a new line of magnetic T
and C-slot cylinder sensors that provide discrete output regarding the
end-of-stroke position of pistons in pneumatic cylinders. Compact and
economical, these non-contact sensors offer precise, repeatable
switching behavior with defined and tested activation sensitivity. The
sensor's rugged, IP67-rated plastic housing provides reliable operation
in harsh and wet end-use environments. Five different,
universally-applicable standard C and T-slot sensors are available for
use in round cylinders and cylinders with tie-rods. Baumer Magnetic
Cylinder Sensors are designed for quick and easy installation. Available
in both NPN and PNP outputs, these sensors feature cable or fly-lead
connectors and a wide, 3-30 volt OC supply range. --- Baumer Electric

PLC-Based Position Controllers
SCHAUMBURG, IL: New Position Controllers from Omron Electronics LLC
use a high-speed motion network to provide high precision control of 2,
4 and 16 axes to meet the growing need for fast throughput with reduced
waste. The position controllers pair efficiently with Omron's GN-Series
servo drives and G-Series motors, and are compatible with a range of
programmable controller platforms for a scalable solution. Designed for
Omron's CJ and CS PLC platforms, the CJ position controllers can be
paired with the micro CP1H controller for 2- and 4-axis standalone
applications on a small machine or combined with CJ1, CJ2 or CS1
controllers for high-speed, high I/O count applications used on a full
production line. The motion network reduces the total cost of ownership
by simplifying operation, reducing wiring, offering centralized setup
and single point access monitoring, and lowering the upfront hardware
and software costs. --- Omron Electronics LLC
