Manufacturers Are Struggling to Find Skilled Workers
Nearly one-third of manufacturers report some level of shortages today and over one-half report shortages for skilled production workers and engineers according to a survey conducted by Deloitte Consulting, The Manufacturing Institute and Oracle. The report, "People And Profitability - A Time For Change: A 2009 People Management Practices Survey Of The Manufacturing Industry," indicates an ongoing talent challenge facing manufacturing organizations and a continued need for them to embrace new and progressive talent strategies.

Manufacturing to Grow 5.7% in 2010
Economic growth in the United States will resume in 2010, according to the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) in their December 2009 Semiannual Economic Forecast. Manufacturing revenues will grow 5.7 percent in 2010 compared to a 10.7 percent decrease in 2009. Expectations for 2010 are for the positive conditions experienced in the second half of 2009 to continue in manufacturing, while the non-manufacturing sector foresees marginal growth. The overall forecast projects optimism about the U.S. economy for 2010. The manufacturing sector overall is positive about prospects in 2010 with revenues expected to increase in 13 of 18 industries, while the non-manufacturing sector appears slightly less positive about the year ahead with 8 of 18 industries expecting higher revenues. Business investment, a major driver in the U.S. economy, will decline as both sectors expect a combined average of a 5.4 percent decline in capital spending.

Motors Shipments Rise During Third Quarter of 2009
NEMA's Motors Shipments Index (MSI) increased 1.7 percent during the third quarter of 2009. Still, the index continued to reflect a weak demand environment for motors, lagging nearly 23 percent behind its year ago level. Inflation- and seasonally-adjusted shipments of fractional horsepower motors increased for the second consecutive quarter, while integral HP motors registered their fifth decline in the last six quarters. This modest gain in motors demand did not come as a total surprise, given that a host of indicators suggest the U.S. economy emerged from recession some time during the summer. Indeed, real GDP expanded 3.5 percent on an annualized basis during the third quarter. Consumer spending perked up and the housing market showed some signs of improvement, with construction, prices and sales increasing during the quarter. Federal spending bolstered the topline reading as well due to ramped-up defense spending and a faster pace of release of stimulus funds. Businesses continue to liquidate inventories, but that process appears to coming to an end, or at least slowing dramatically.

Multi-Function Digital Pressure Sensor
STRATFORD, CT: The new Ashcroft® GC35 digital pressure sensor provides remote signaling, local reading and pressure control, all in one small, rugged design. Equipped with a 4-20mA analog output, 4 digit LED display and programmable switch contacts, this multi-function instrument performs the functions of a transducer, digital indicator and pressure switch. The GC35 is offered in ranges from 0/50 through 0/7500 psig and compound ranges to 300 psi, and is available with either a back or bottom-located pressure connection. Unique qualities include a nickel plated cast aluminum housing and a brilliant, tri-color "GloBand™" to provide a 360° visual indication of switch status. Other standard features include min/max recall and adjustable analog scaling along with RoHS and CE compliance. --- Ashcroft Inc.

Serial Bus System for Automation & Motion Control Offers Convenience
TROY, MI: D Series Serial Bus system for fieldbus communication and I/O modules support the widely used MODBUS TCP and DEVICENETTM protocols and require no internal wiring for simple assembly. The ROSS D Series Serial Bus system offers many benefits, including the flexibility of plug together assembly for convenient modular manifold construction. The units are designed for ease-of-use and provide one set of wires to a valve bank. When the bank is remotely located, this design can prevent unnecessarily long wiring runs back to the main control panel. This saves wiring set up time and also eases any troubleshooting efforts. For maximum design flexibility, the ROSS D Series Serial Bus communication module offers an extended range of I/O points. It provides various combinations of up to 352 digital outputs, 256 digital inputs, 16 analog outputs and 16 analog inputs. This allows one communication module to control up to 352 output devices or to receive input from up to 256 devices. The broad control ability contained in this one communication module allows users to save time otherwise spent on procuring and wiring up additional units. --- Ross Controls

Turbidity Analyzer, Transmitter, and Controller
STAMFORD, CT: Omega's new CE compliant TRCN440 series turbidity analyzers are available in 3 models. The TRCN441 is designed for medium to high turbidity ranges, the TRCN442 targets lower turbidity ranges ideally from 10 to 100 NTU and is ideal for applications in the beverage industry, mining and water treatment. Lastly, the TRCN443 is specifically designed for ultra low turbidity readings below 10 NTU for applications like drinking water and pure water. All models are compact in design, are light weight with the NEMA 4X (IP67), and include local indication, transmitter outputs and control outputs. --- Omega Engineering Inc.
