Robot Plays Guitar Hero
Game
Banner Engineering Corp. partnered with a Minnesota West Community
and Technical College engineering student and robotics instructor to
develop a robot designed to play the Guitar Hero® video
game—responding to each note as it appears onscreen. Pete Nikrin,
who graduated from Minnesota West in 2008 and now works as a
manufacturing engineer at Meier Tool & Engineering, designed the robot
to compete with a friend that Nikrin had introduced to the game and,
after playing for two weeks, had surpassed Nikrin in his ability. To
develop his Guitar Hero robot, Nikrin used a mannequin—complete
with Minnesota West sweatshirt, hat and painted fingernails—and
installed the camera lens as the robot's left eye, which would be
positioned toward the TV or computer screen. The robot, named Roxanne,
identified the notes to be played by using an Edge vision tool, which
detects, counts and locates the transition between bright and dark
pixels in an image area.

Solar Shaded Parking
Structure
Envision Solar International, Inc., the leader in solar integrated
building systems, announced today the completion of a solar shaded
parking structure of Solar Trees® at Dell's headquarters in Round
Rock, TX. This configuration of Solar Trees®, called a Solar
Grove®, is designed to produce more than 130kW of solar power,
helping avoid 145,000 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions per year. The
Solar Trees®, located in the Dell employee parking lot, will
simultaneously shade 50 parking spaces and generate clean electricity
directly from the sun. In an example of Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G)
technology, the solar arrays also incorporate two Envision Solar
CleanCharge™ solar charging stations utilizing Coulomb
ChargPoint™ for Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Plug-In Hybrid
Electric Vehicles (PHEVs).

Video Takes a Humorous Look at the
History of Linear Actuation
Tolomatic takes a light-hearted look at the evolution of linear
actuation and motion control in a new video, "A History of Linear
Actuation," now available on YouTube. Featuring a caveman, a medieval
battering ram and Rube Goldberg-style inventions, the video is a
timeline of how man has attempted to solve linear actuation problems
through the ages.

Crimp On Solid Wire Eliminates Soldering &
Welding
WARWICK, RI: A new crimp ear design for electrical terminals
exceeds UL 310 specifications and can be crimped on stranded and solid
wire using high speed applicators. The crimp ear design creates reliable
terminal connections on both solid and stranded wire and meets or
exceeds UL 310 specifications, depending upon the application.
Eliminating the need for soldering and welding processes, terminals
featuring this open-barrel crimp ear can be made from a wide range of
clad and inlaid alloys in configurations from .008" to 0.900" thick with
tolerances to ±0.002", depending upon the materials and specific
design. Supplied as continuous strip on reels and supported by the
firm's high-speed application equipment, ETCO's Crimp Ear Design is
available in brass, tinned brass, nickel-plated steel, copper plated
steel, tinned steel bearing bronze, phosphor-bronze, beryllium-copper,
and high temperature alloys. Samples are available. --- Etco

Ultra Stable Precision Thin Film
Resistors
FULLERTON, CA: Providing design engineers with increased
flexibility in circuit layout, TT Electronics BI Technologies now offers
a passive voltage divider engineering sample kit. Designated
SFN06VDKIT, the sample kits contain several different versions of the
company's SFN Series voltage dividers, which feature two ultra-stable
precision thin film resistors. Connected in series, the resistors are
packaged in a SON (QFN) 6-pad package measuring 2mm2 with a 0.65mm pitch
- 40% smaller than voltage dividers in three-lead SOT23 packages. "With
the small package size and variety of resistance values available, the
voltage divider sample kit provides design engineers with increased
circuit layout flexibility," said Mike Torres, fixed film product
manager for BI Technologies. "Our customers can now prototype their
designs to best meet specific voltage divider and gain setting circuits
in military, aerospace, industrial, and medical applications." --- BI
Technologies
