Are Standards Driving New Interconnect
Technology?
While the output of committees is often criticized, there is little
doubt that the electronics industry is experiencing a proliferation of
standards-writing organizations. Groups that are actively generating new
standards range from formal standards organizations, such as IEEE and
VITA, to special interest groups (SIGS), industry consortiums, companies
that participate in multisource agreements (MSAs), and select
industry-leading companies. Specifications may define a portion of a
system, such as the bus structure or input/output interface, while
others define the entire system's mechanical and electrical
platform.

Consumer electronics to boom 23%;
wireless connectivity prevails
Two recent reports from ABI Research indicate that the
consumer-electronics industry, and particularly the home-networking
market, will enjoy healthy growth over the next half-decade. One of the
two reports also states that wireless connectivity will own the day as
this boom plays out. In the report "Connected Home Devices Market Data,"
ABI analyst Serene Fong observes, "Service providers view home
networking not only as an avenue to create consumer loyalty but also as
a new revenue-generating cash cow." She further explains that rather
than pure voice or data services, service providers now include content,
applications, networking, and sometimes gaming and energy management in
their service offerings. Despite that glowing report, Fong cautions
there are obstacles still to be overcome. "Service providers and
equipment manufacturers should not rest on their laurels," Fong says.
"Price, product quality, and end-user experiences still remain intensely
competitive and manufacturers will have to keep their customers
satisfied before they can start hoping for real significant revenue
growth."

HRL to Participate on GM Team to Turn
Engine Heat into Energy
HRL Laboratories will participate on a team headed by General Motors
to exploit the unique qualities of shape memory alloys (SMAs) to
potentially develop devices that scavenge waste heat to recover lost
thermal energy. The effort is funded by the Department of Energy's
Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), established to
develop innovative and efficient technologies in energy generation and
storage. The project is one of 37 recently funded by the ARPA-E. HRL
will partner with GM as well as Dynalloy Inc. and the University of
Michigan's Smart Materials Collaborative Research Lab on the project,
dubbed the Lightweight Thermal Energy Recovery, or LighTER, System. The
team plans to develop an SMA-based prototype system. SMAs are
solid-state actuator materials that can intrinsically convert thermal
energy into mechanical energy. "While the concept has been investigated
since the 1970s, new developments in the maturity of SMA materials could
theoretically enable devices that output more power per unit weight and
last much longer than previous generations," said Dr. Geoffrey McKnight,
manager of HRL's Active Materials and Adaptive Structures Technologies
Lab and HRL lead on the program. "The technology is very general and
could be used to increase the efficiency of a variety of systems and
processes."

30-Cycle Bypass/Isolation Switches
HINGHAM, MA: Russelectric RTS Series Bypass/Isolation Switches are
UL labeled and listed for 30-cycle closing and withstand ratings based
on testing per UL Standard 1008. Available in continuous current
ratings from 100 to 3000 amps, these switches dramatically simplify the
selective coordination of overcurrent devices in backup power systems
for healthcare and other mission-critical facilities. The 30-cycle
rating of Russelectric RTS Series Bypass/Isolation Switches allows
downstream overcurrent protective devices to clear a fault before
upstream devices. Consequently, they greatly simplify the engineering
task of selective coordination mandated by the National Electrical Code
for emergency and legally required standby systems. No other
manufacturer offers such a comprehensive range of 30-cycle-rated
bypass/isolation switches. All RTS Series switches come equipped with
the new RPTCS - the industry's most powerful, most versatile
microprocessor-based transfer control system. --- Russelectric

High Output Voltage Power
Converters
ASHLAND, MA: Schaefer, Inc. announces the C4500HV Series of high
output voltage power converters. The C4500HV Series can accept high
input voltages of up to 3000VDC. The converter provides high output
voltages and is ideal for applications that require reliable power for
remote locations. The Series' robust design, using industrial grade
components, yields a highly efficient, space-saving 6U solution for even
the most extreme environments. The C4500HV Series is based upon
Schaefer's C/B4500 Series, which offers an extensive lineup of over 150
standard models. Standard DC input voltage options span a range from
10VDC to 800VDC. AC input models offer either 1-Phase or 3-Phase
options as well as battery charging models. Single output voltages
encompass a range from 9VDC to 400VDC, all of which are adjustable and
fully regulated to 0.2% or better (load) and 0.1% (line). ---

EXAIR Corporation -
Cabinet Cooler® Systems
EXAIR’s new digital ETC (Electronic Temperature Control) Cabinet
Cooler® System keeps electrical enclosures cool while minimizing
compressed air use. The ETC™ can accurately maintain a constant
temperature that is slightly under the maximum rating of the
electronics, permitting just enough cooling for the electronics
without going so cold as to waste compressed air.
