Respirator
Inspection
You know that if your employees are using respirators, you must have
a written policy, provide training, do a medical evaluation, and perform
periodic inspections of the respirator. The employer must ensure that a
minimally acceptable inspection of a respirator includes the following:
- A check of respirator function;
- Tightness of connections;
- Condition of the various parts, including but not limited to the
respirator's elastic parts for pliability and signs of deterioration.
At a minimum, the employer should follow the manufacturer's
instructions that accompany the respirator.
It's always a good idea to do periodic refresher training for employees
on your respirator program, how to check for a good fit, and to perform
periodic inspections of the respirators.

Revised eyewash and shower standard
receives ANSI stamp of approval
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) recently approved a
revised version of the emergency eyewash and shower standard. The new
standard called ANSI/ISEA Z358.1-2009, American National Standard for
Emergency Eyewash and Shower Equipment, is the authoritative document
that specifies minimum performance criteria for flow rates, temperature,
and drenching patterns - all characteristics that are important for a
user to receive adequate rinsing of a contaminant in an emergency
situation. In addition, the standard incorporates requirements and
maintenance directives for an installer to ensure that the equipment is
available in proper working condition.
Significant changes in the 2009 edition include:
- Defined temperature parameters for flushing fluid delivery.
- Clarification of certification procedures that allows for freedom
in designing compliant equipment.
- Expansion of criteria for personal washes to ensure that they meet
any applicable regulatory requirements.
- Updated illustrations to reflect design configuration that are
known to meet the criteria in the standard.

Industrial Dye Glows Bright Blue to Detect
Leaks
WESTBURY, NY: OIL-GLO™ 40 is a versatile, oil-based,
fluorescent leak detection dye that is formulated specifically for large
industrial systems. This new dye accurately pinpoints leaks in all
synthetic- or petroleum-based fluid systems, including light-colored
hydraulic fluid, very dark or intensely blue hydraulic and lubrication
fluids, compressor oil, engine oil and gearbox oil. OIL-GLO 40 contains
more active ingredients per ounce than competitive dyes, so it is
extremely cost-effective. OIL-GLO 40 is easy to use. Simply add the dye
to any oil-based system and allow it to circulate for 5 to 10 minutes.
Wherever there is a leak, the dye escapes with the system oil and
remains at the site of all leaks. --- Spectronics Corp.
