Eighth graders learn about fluid power at NFPA Fluid Power Challenge
The 2009 series of National Fluid Power Association (NFPA) Fluid Power Challenges has been successfully completed. The program was expanded this year to 47 teams, nearly 200 students from 26 middle schools, who competed in four locations—Marquette University and Milwaukee School of Engineering in Milwaukee, WI; Harper College in Palatine, IL; and the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN. At workshops in early November, the students were given the assignment of designing and constructing a fluid power mechanism to perform a defined task. The mechanisms were required to use fluid power (hydraulics and pneumatics) to pick up weighted objects, and then place them on a platform for various point totals. The program is designed to introduce students, and their teachers, to the world of engineering and careers in fluid power. Through the Challenges, NFPA hopes to encourage students to select more mathematics and science courses in their high school curricula to keep their options open for technology-based post-secondary studies.

Manufacturers Are Struggling to Find Skilled Workers
Nearly one-third of manufacturers report some level of shortages today and over one-half report shortages for skilled production workers and engineers according to a survey conducted by Deloitte Consulting, The Manufacturing Institute and Oracle. The report, "People And Profitability - A Time For Change: A People Management Practices Survey Of The Manufacturing Industry," indicates an ongoing talent challenge facing manufacturing organizations and a continued need for them to embrace new and progressive talent strategies.

Manufacturing to Grow 5.7% in 2010
Economic growth in the United States will resume in 2010, according to the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) in their December 2009 Semiannual Economic Forecast. Manufacturing revenues will grow 5.7 percent in 2010 compared to a 10.7 percent decrease in 2009. Expectations for 2010 are for the positive conditions experienced in the second half of 2009 to continue in manufacturing, while the non-manufacturing sector foresees marginal growth. The overall forecast projects optimism about the U.S. economy for 2010. The manufacturing sector overall is positive about prospects in 2010 with revenues expected to increase in 13 of 18 industries, while the non-manufacturing sector appears slightly less positive about the year ahead with 8 of 18 industries expecting higher revenues. Business investment, a major driver in the U.S. economy, will decline as both sectors expect a combined average of a 5.4 percent decline in capital spending.

Membrane, Pleated, Depth, and Specialty Filters
ELIZABETH, NJ: Eaton Corporation offers a new line of filters, the LOFMEM™ membrane filter, the LOFPLEAT™ pleated filter, the LOFTREX™ depth filter, and a series of specialty filters marketed under the brands LOFSORB™, LOFMET™, and LOFCLEAN™ that are engineered to handle a wide range of liquid process applications across a broad range of industries. LOFMEM Series Membrane Cartridges are absolute rated filters designed to provide precise, repeatable, sub-micron level filtration; LOFPLEAT Series Cartridges offer a pleated configuration that provides higher surface area than depth filters for greater dirt holding and longer on-stream life; LOFTREX Series Depth Filtration Cartridges are cylindrical filters with a tortuous path for capturing a wide range of particle sizes and gelatinous contaminants; and LOFSORB, LOFMET, and LOFCLEAN Specialty Series Filters are constructed of different extruded carbon, porous metal, and resin bonded materials that provide unique performance benefits. --- Eaton Filtration LLC
Thread Sealant for High Pressure Gaseous and Fluid Power Systems
ROCKY HILL, CT: Henkel Corporation has introduced a new thread sealant, Loctite® 5452™, specifically formulated for use on metal fittings found in high pressure hydraulic and pneumatic power systems. Curing four times faster than traditional anaerobic sealants even on stainless steel or inert metals, Loctite® 5452™ allows fittings under low pressure to be returned to service immediately. Designed to fill, seal and secure the air space between threads, this sealant contains no fillers or particles that could contaminate system fluids, foul valves or clog fine filters/screens. This thixotropic purple gel works well on any size NPT, O-ring boss (ORB) or JIC fitting, and prevents rotation that ultimately leads to leakage on dry seal fittings. --- Henkel Corp.
