AWS to Tackle Shortage of
Welders
The welding industry has endured no test quite as complex and
immense as the one we now face: the shortage of welders. There is no
question about the importance of welding. There are currently more than
500,000 welders working in this country, and studies have indicated that
the welding industry represents no less than $34 billion in the
manufacturing, construction, and mining sectors, where welding is
considered a critical enabling technology. Yet, despite the strong need
for welding professionals, this country remains in the midst of a
crippling shortage of skilled welders. The American Welding Society is
initiating programs to tackle the worker shortage.

Mastercam's 25th
Anniversary
CNC Software, Inc. is celebrating its 25th Anniversary in 2008. Two
brothers, Mark and Jack Summers incorporated the company in 1983 with a
new programming concept for CNC (Computer-Numerical-Control) machine
tools. They developed a PC-based CAD/CAM
(Computer-Aided-Design/Computer-Aided-Manufacturing) software package
with an emphasis on the CAM side. During that time, most of the programs
were more CAD-oriented and expensive. Today, Mastercam(r)is arguably the
most recognized and best selling brand of CAD/CAM software in the world
and has the highest number of seats installed - 135,824 at the end of
2007.

The Emerging Technology Center at IMTS
2008
Emerging Technology Center, in addition to having university &
research laboratories exhibit their new technology research and
development efforts in science-based manufacturing and innovative
process developments, will be showcasing MTConnect, a new open
communication protocol standard for interconnectability between
machines, independent systems, devices and higher level applications.
"MTConnect may be the most exciting development in our industry since
the introduction of NC almost 40 years ago," says Peter Eelman, IMTS
Vice President - Exhibitions. "We are mirroring the success occurring in
the information technology world. That is, allowing devices, equipment,
and systems to output data in an understandable format that can be read
by any other device using the same standard format to read the data.
MTConnect will enable everyone in the production supply chain to be part
of making the manufacturing enterprise more productive." MTConnect will
be open and royalty free to insure the widest possible acceptance and
utility.

Bridgeport 5-Axis Machining Center
ELMIRA, NY: Bridgeport, a member of The Hardinge Group, is
introducing it's newest member of their XR-Series VMCs -- the
fully-integrated 5-axis XR 600 5AX High-Performance vertical machining
center. Positioned in the top of Bridgeport's machining center portfolio
(above the Standard XV-Series and the Performance GX-Series), this
performance-focused machine offers a diverse range of applications
within the aerospace, automotive, motor sport, medical, mold and tool
and die sectors. The Bridgeport XR 600 5AX features a very rigid
bridge-style design and 45mm fixed pre-tensioned double-nut cooled
ballscrews on all linear axes. The 600mm (23.62") diameter integrated
dual-axis rotary table with 150-degree tilt and 5-arc second accuracy
enhances the machine's flexibility and high precision machining
capability. The ability to machine complex shapes, undercuts and
difficult angles in a single setup reduces tooling cost and labor time,
resulting in lower cost per part in addition to maintaining parts
conformity throughout production runs. --- Hardinge Inc.

Simultaneously Measures Roughness and
Contour
ROCHESTER, NY: The new HOMMEL nanoscan in just one pass with a
single probe can measure roughness and contour of practically any shape.
The new instrument can measure surfaces with a stroke of 24mm with a
resolution of 0.68 nanometers (nm) over the entire measuring range.
Capable of complex measuring tasks, nanoscan features an innovative
integrated software/hardware concept that enables users to capture
micro- and macro-structures of parts with very narrow tolerances in
short cycle times. The nanoscan is ideal for producers of high-precision
parts and assemblies where contour and roughness features are critical,
such as fuel injection, transmission parts, pumps, and valves for
automotive, aerospace and medical applications. ---

Spiral-Bottom Round-Bowl Machine
ALBERT LEA, MN: ALMCO, Inc., the world's largest manufacturer of
automated metal parts deburring and finishing equipment, has expanded
its line to include a spiral-bottom round-bowl unit with a unique
full-circle baffle that keeps parts in the media mass constantly for
faster, more precise processing. The Model SBB-12 has a 12-cubic-foot,
urethane-lined tub for parts protection. Other spiral-bottom models
available from the manufacturer have tub capacities of 8 and 15 cubic
feet, while custom-designed models offer capacities up to 100 cubic
feet. ALMCO's spiral design features automatic separation of parts from
the abrasive media, at predetermined intervals according to finishing
requirements. Its separating screen surface is longer than other
round-bowl designs, which permits faster separation of parts and machine
unloading. The SBB-12 is engineered to lift and move many different
parts positively over the separating dam without jamming or hitting each
other on the screen. The tub can also serve as a thru-feed or one-pass
machine - adding to the SBB's versatility - when the dam is held in the
up position. --- Almco Inc.
