Breakthrough made in energy
efficiency, use of waste heat
Engineers at Oregon State University have made a major new advance
in taking waste heat and using it to run a cooling system - a technology
that can improve the energy efficiency of diesel engines, and perhaps
some day will appear in automobiles, homes and industry. This
heat-actuated cooling system, which will probably find its first
applications by the U.S. Army, could ultimately be applied to
automobiles, factories or other places where waste heat is being
generated, and used to provide either air conditioning or
electricity.

Preparing for workplace
emergencies
Human error is the single largest cause of workplace emergencies.
Poor training, carelessness, misconduct, substance abuse, or fatigue can
all contribute to human error. Everyone needs to know his/her role to
play in an emergency situation. Employees need to know when to act and
when not to act.
Every employee needs to understand the evacuation plan, alarm systems,
reporting procedures, and types of potential emergencies. Discuss any
special hazards, such as flammable materials, toxic chemicals, or
water-reactive substances.
Training should address the following:
- Individual roles and responsibilities;
- Threats, hazards, and protective actions;
- Notification, warning, and communication procedures;
- Emergency response procedures;
- Evacuation, shelter, and accountability procedures;
- Location and use of common emergency equipment; and
- Emergency shutdown procedures.
You may need to provide additional training (e.g., first aid
procedures, fire extinguisher use) depending on the responsibilities for
designated employees. Finally, practice the plan. Frequently practicing
what you intend to do during a disaster — through drills and
exercises — will help you prepare!

Tips to go Green and Save
Green
Do you want to reduce the energy costs at your plant? Dennis
Sadlowski, President and CEO of Siemens Energy & Automation, Inc., the
U.S. industrial arm of German engineering giant, Siemens AG, recommends
the following five easy tips for factory and manufacturing facility
owners and operators to reduce their carbon footprint and start reaping
the savings:
- Do Your Homework. First and foremost, you will not know how
much you can save, until you know where the money is being spent. An
Energy Audit will help you better understand your energy usage and
determine where your facility can go green and save money. Siemens
specialists will come to your facility to identify key energy saving
areas for your facilities current and future needs.
- Rethink Your Lighting. By simply replacing your lighting
with energy efficient products and controls, you can reduce energy
consumption up to 50% as well as eliminate the risk of mercury
contaminants in a very short period of time. Siemens offers a variety of
lighting solutions and programs that lower utility bills and reduce air
pollution. Siemens also offers lighting controls that help reduce your
energy consumption with smart schedules and automated control.
- Evaluate Your Motors & Drives. Electric motors are
responsible for almost 70% of all energy consumed in industrial
applications. This 70% holds a considerable saving potential that is
just waiting to be realized. So why not start now by replace existing
motors with energy efficient motors? Or save even more by adding
variable frequency drive systems to the motors. In some cases, drives
can contribute a 30% energy savings with a seven month return on
investment.
- Control Heating & Cooling Costs. As much as 30% of the
energy used in your facility comes from heating and cooling costs.
Making smart decisions about your facility's heating, ventilating and
air conditioning (HVAC) system can have a significant impact on your
utility bills. Simply adding Siemens' drive and control systems can
reduce costs by as much as 25%.
- Monitor the Situation. By knowing and understanding their
plants' electrical footprint and monitoring energy use, companies can
track their progress toward efficiency goals as well as establish
benchmarks for achievement. With an Intelligent Energy Monitoring system
from Siemens, you can keep track of energy usage across multiple
locations from one central source to ensure maximum efficiency and
control costs.

Enclosed Cable Carrier Keeps Debris
Out
EAST PROVIDENCE, RI: igus® has now developed an energy tube
especially for the machine-tool industry that is almost 100 percent
chip-proof. The airtight, fully enclosed cable carrier ensures all
debris simply falls off. The new-style "RX" energy tube has a specially
designed, smooth domed exterior onto which debris—such as metal or
wood chips—can not attach itself. Connecting parts are concealed
on the interior to facilitate this. Comprehensive tests—including
underwater experiments—have been carried out in igus®' test
laboratories which confirm the new energy tube is 100 percent airtight.
Despite this, the RX energy tube can be easily opened using a
screwdriver to unscrew bolts integrated into the outer radius of each
link. There is also a very large interior space for cables and hoses,
which can be separated using vertical separators, and a horizontal shelf
to safely route cables and hoses and thereby prevent abrasion. Both
these features mean maintenance and machine downtimes are reduced to a
minimum. The new energy tube is well suited to short, self-supporting
lengths inside tooling machines. --- igus Inc.

Precision Hone Tools Produce Tight
Tolerances
ST. LOUIS, MO: The new Precision Hone tooling system from Sunnen
Products is true to its name incorporating integral air gaging with an
automatic shutdown mechanism for non-contact, in-process bore sizing to
tolerances of 0.005 mm (0.0002 inch). PH tools use custom-designed and
fitted multi-stone tool heads, with the number and placement of stones
dictated by the application. Ideal for honing diesel cylinder liners,
compressor cylinders, automotive engines, small engines and aircraft
cylinder bores with diameters from 57 mm (2.25 in.) to 300 mm (12 in.).
PH tools can be used with Sunnen or other manufacturers' machines and
include three abrasive options - metal-bond superabrasive (diamond or
CBN), conventional abrasive (aluminum oxide/silicon carbide) and plateau
brush (abrasive impregnated filament). PH tools are made with
high-quality steel components throughout, with long-life carbide
guides/air jets. Bayonet air connections on the tool heads facilitate
fast changeovers. --- Sunnen Products Co.
