Clutches and actuators provide a smooth ride on China's Great Wheel
In Beijing, China, plans are underway to build the Great Wheel of China, a giant ferris wheel which will hold the record as the world's highest observation wheel, with views reaching the famous Great Wall of China. Warner Electric, part of worldwide power transmission group Altra Industrial Motion, has supplied the wheel manufacturer, SIGMA, with linear actuators to open the doors and electromagnetic clutches to control the yaw of each of the 48 observation carriages.When the world's tallest Ferris Wheel is completed in late 2009, it will stand 680 feet high (208m ), which is over 130 feet (40m) taller than the current highest wheel in Singapore. The wheel will have 48 air conditioned carriages which will each be able to hold 40 passengers, giving it a total of capacity of 1,920 passengers. The wheel will be so high that on clear days passengers will have a view stretching all the way to the Great Wall of China.
Manufacturers Consider Migrating Back to U.S.
A new study by Archstone Consulting shows that companies are contemplating the re-establishment of manufacturing domestically, amid rising costs and other strategic challenges within the off-shoring model. As companies reassess their manufacturing and supply chain strategies for today's global economic environment, the trend may create significant job opportunities in the U.S., according to the recent study. The study found that almost 90% of the companies surveyed are considering changing -- or have begun changing -- their manufacturing and supply strategy and are being more and more selective in making off-shoring decisions. U.S. manufacturers have become increasingly aware of the need for a more sophisticated total cost model that considers factors such as supplier price and terms, delivery costs, operations and quality costs, customer-centric supply capabilities and other situational costs that arise.

DC Brushless Motor & Control
FORT SMITH, AR: DC Brushless Motor and Control allows adjustable speed applications to benefit from the features of brushless technology. Baldor's new family of BSM25C and BSM33C brushless motors provide designers with benefits of brushless motors which include higher torque and more power in smaller packages, reduced maintenance, and quieter operation. These motors are available from stock, with standard NEMA face/foot mount, ranging from 1/4 to 3 HP (0.18 - 2.2Kw). The new BMC series controls are simple to operate, as no programming is necessary; they provide a tight speed regulation better than 0.5%; and use the industry standard input command (+/- 10Vdc) or optional pot input for speed control. The control uses standard 115/208/230 Vac and is available from stock. The combination of BSM motor and BMC control is adjustable to cover a wide speed range to 7000 rpm, provide adjustable acceleration time from 0.1 - 30 seconds, and comes in a fully protected package. --- Baldor Electric Co.
New D Series Gear Motor Excels in Demanding Off-Road Applications
AMES, IA: New D Series cast iron gear motor provides a 276 bar [4000 psi] solution in a ductile, three piece housing, complete with an electrohydraulic proportional relief valve. Stainless Steel Linear Rails
EAST LONGMEADOW, MA: LM76 introduces their new, DEFENDER Linear Rail™ linear bearing system. This all stainless steel rail and bearing system is strong, anti-magnetic, corrosion resistant, low cost and easy to install. Designed to be washed down with disinfectants or high strength industrial cleaners the DEFENDER Linear Rail™ linear bearing system is ideal for medical, pharmaceutical and food processing applications, as well as draw and rack glides, and sliding doors. The bearing rails are rolled 304 stainless with an internal bearing race. Each three bearing slider unit is 80 mm (3.15 inches) long. Each 440C stainless steel ball bearing roller is lubricated for life, features 2RS seals, and can be washed down. The slider's center bearing is mounted on a eccentric shaft for adjusting the preload. The cross section of the compact bearing and slider is only 26 mm x .22 mm (1.02 in. x .866 in.). The Stainless Steel rails are available in lengths of 1040 mm (40.94 in.), 1520 mm (59.84 in.), 2080 mm (81.89 in.), and 3120 mm (122.83 in.) or in cut to order. --- LM76
