Go green without going broke!
New EarthAware™ biodegradable and recycled
films from Automated Packaging Systems offer a cost-effective
alternative to PLAs and other bio films. EarthAware film is available
for both Autobag® bags-on-a-roll and AirPouch® void-fill and
protective packing applications. EarthAware LDPE and LLDPE biodegradable
films maintain their characteristics for strength, clarity, sealing and
shelf life, yet degrade when placed in a landfill or commercial
composting facility.

RFID is Real, is Now
"RFID isn't a technology-in-waiting," declares Tom O'Boyle, vice
president, RFID Solutions, Miles Technologies, Inc. "There are standards
in place for passive tag technology, and there are standards being
established and reviewed for the active tag arena as well." He assures
that, "RFID is no longer a beta test anymore, either, as 'real' RFID
applications are being implemented every day." However, he is concerned
about RFID becoming a "catch-all" phrase for technology that
"encompasses everything from short-range, non-battery, passive-type
tagging applications all the way through to real-time, active tag with a
battery location system." Since the individual solutions are used quite
differently, it is imperative for users to become familiar with the
differences among them, and understand how to use specific technology to
realize the appropriate benefits from their RFID investment, according
to O'Boyle. "People today are more educated on RFID than they had
been," he acknowledges, "so their desires of what RFID can do versus
what they think RFID should do have become more closely
aligned."

Voice Technology in the
Warehouse
Even considering its mainstream appeal and high-tech functions --
hands-free, eyes-free, wireless access -- Voice technology may not
always be the right solution for your warehouse. The new white paper,
Voice in the Warehouse: All Talk, or True Solution? by Tom Singer,
Principal at Tompkins Associates suggests that while Voice technology in
the warehouse typically allows for more choice, flexibility, better
price points, standardization of infrastructure, improved performance,
and rapid return on investments (ROI), companies should investigate
carefully before they take the plunge.

Automated Packaging Slip System
EXPORT, PA: TwinPrint Label Printer Applicator automates the entire
shipping label/packing slip process - no more printing, folding,
stuffing and applying packing slips or shipping labels by hand to the
cartons and no more customer complaints that the address label and
packing slip don't match. The FOX IV TwinPrint Label Printer Applicator
is a print and apply system equipped with two printheads. It prints and
automatically applies both the shipping label information and the
packing slip information on a single label. This guarantees that the
shipping address label always matches the packing slip. The Label
Printer Applicator is mounted above the conveyor and prints and applies
the shipping label/packing slip to the top of a shipping carton at
speeds up to 25 cartons per minute. There is no need to stop the carton
for this label application. Like all the label printer applicators in
FOX IV's Uniwall Series, The TwinPrint System comes standard with a
16-inch OD label roll and a rugged unwind/rewind system that is gentle
on the label webbing. The 16-inch standard OD roll provides 75% more
label capacity than the industry standard 12-inch OD roll. --- Fox IV

Hot Air Shrink Tunnel
SOUTH NORWALK, CT: PDC International Corp. has introduced the
"Ambiance" Hot Air™ Shrink Tunnels. They use a combination of
three dry heat technologies: re-circulating hot air, blown hot air and
PDC's proprietary "SPAF" system, which injects cool air into the sleeve,
controlling the areas of greatest shrink. Ambiance produces highly
consistent "steam-like" results where the use of steam is impractical or
unavailable. Ambiance provides perfect control of the sleeve
temperature, from room temperature to shrink temperature. Highly
efficient and low in wattage, Ambiance only warms re-circulated air when
required, resulting in large energy savings. Shrink temperatures and
heat application are precisely controlled, enabling the sleeve to
conform perfectly to the container. Sixteen directed nozzles are
arranged in a precise, "ascend" profile for greatest control. Heating
elements are electronically regulated from 3kW to 18 kW, custom to the
application. --- PDC International Corp.
