Making Sure Workers Come Home Safely
Safety at work means always coming home and during North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week, to be held May 3-9, 2009 and the May 6, 2009 Occupational Safety and Health Professional Day, the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE) and more than 40 OSHA Alliance Program participants representing thousands of businesses worldwide will illustrate the value of workplace safety in helping workers return home from work to their families injury free. Alliance Program participants include organizations such as the American Heart Association, the Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA), American Red Cross, Dow Chemical, Abbott, the Brick Industry Association, the National Association of Home Builders and more.

To raise awareness about the prevention of workplace injuries and illnesses during NAOSH Week, ASSE, OSHA and CSSE will have a national NAOSH Week Kick-off in Washington, D.C., Monday May 4, with events at the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and the U.S. Capitol as well as worldwide. In 2008, NAOSH Week expanded globally with events held in Canada, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and more. ASSE will also recognize the winners of the seventh annual ASSE kids' 'Safety-on-the-Job' poster contest for children aged 5-14 during the NAOSH Week award ceremony.

'Safety Plugs' for Prevention of Arc Flash Accidents
FRANKLIN, WI: Switch-rated Safety Plugs and Receptacles prevent exposure to arc flash and live part sand include UL switch ratings, a safety shutter, and easy lockout/tagout provisions. Safety Plugs and Receptacles are UL approved for use as a 'motor circuit disconnect switch' and as a 'branch circuit disconnect switch'. They feature an integral switching mechanism that ensures the safe make or break of live connections and makes certain that the contacts are dead before the plug can be removed. Safety is also assured when re-inserting the plug into the receptacle because the male contacts do not engage the live female contacts until after they are fully enclosed inside the device's arc chambers, thus preventing outside exposure to arc flash - even in short circuit conditions up to 100 kA. The receptacles feature a safety shutter that ensures user safety by preventing unintentional finger, tool or wire access to live parts. By preventing worker exposure to live parts the safety shutter is able to maintain an electrically safe work environment as required in the NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace. --- Meltric Corp.

Heat Stress Monitor
AMHERST, NH: Heat stroke is a serious risk to workers wearing hot protective clothing or who are involved in strenuous activity where heat and humidity challenge the body's ability to control its internal temperature. To combat this risk, Casella USA has introduced its Microtherm® heat stress monitor. This simple-to-use, handheld device displays in real-time the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) index which is the internationally recognized method of calculating heat stress. The WBGT data collected is then compared to reference values as defined by the ISO 7243 standard. Appropriate "work rest" regimes can be adopted in the work place or medical assistance undertaken. In the event WBGT levels reach dangerous levels the Microtherm will alert the technician with audible and visual alarms. The Microtherm calculates WBGT by means of three sensors that are manufactured to demanding BS 1904 and DIN 43760 accuracy standards. The sensors measure three Parameters: natural wet bulb temperature (tnw), globe temperature (tg) and air temperature (ta). These sensors can be mounted directly on the instrument itself or remotely positioned by cable up to 30 feet away. --- Casella USA

Tower Lights Feature Energy-Efficient Indication
MINNEAPOLIS, MN: Banner Engineering Corp. introduces EZ-LIGHT® TL50 Tower Lights for highly visible operator guidance and indication of equipment status. Displaying up to five colors in one tower and allowing multiple colors to be lit simultaneously, these preassembled and preconfigured multi-segment indicators replace conventional stack lights, which often require time-consuming assembly and complex wiring. In addition, models featuring audible alert with adjustable intensity are available for applications requiring sound indication. Tower Lights require less than 2W of power consumption, compared to 15W for competitive units, making them an energy-efficient solution. Their aesthetic shape, along with a water- and oil-tight industrial housing, makes it possible to mount directly to machines, while standoff pipe and adapters are available for elevated mounting. Green, yellow, red, blue or white LED colors are offered to meet a variety of application needs. --- Banner Engineering Corp.
