Will JAMA Study Linking Folic
Acid to Cancer Affect Consumer Sales?
November 18, 2009
A new study published in the November 18, 2009, issue of the Journal
of the American Medical Association (JAMA) raised concerns that high
folic acid supplementation may increase the risk of developing cancer
and already the general media has picked up the story with
fear-promoting headlines, such as “Folic Acid Supplements Carry Cancer
Risk.” From a sales perspective, B vitamins are the most popular
letter vitamins in the United States and achieved sales of $1.1 billion
in 2008, according to Nutrition Business Journal estimates. Many
in the industry are likely wondering whether this study will have the
same negative
effect on consumer purchasing habits that previous negative research
has had on vitamin
E, which has experienced continual sales declines in recent years.

Study: Prescription-Grade Niacin
May Be More Effective Than Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs
November 18, 2009
New findings presented at the annual scientific meeting of the
American Heart Association (AHA) and published in the The New
England Journal of Medicine show that prescription-grade niacin may
be more effective in lowering cholesterol than the popular cholesterol-lowering
drugs Zetia and Vitorin. The 208-patient study—which
was funded by Abbott
Laboratories, the manufacturer of Niaspan, a
prescription-grade niacin product—concluded that Niaspan
lowered levels of plaque in patients’ arteries more effectively than
its drug counterparts. Read

2009 Raw Material & Ingredient
Supply Report
The world is changing for companies that manufacture and
supply raw materials and ingredients for the U.S. nutrition industry and
2009 is proving to be another eventful year for suppliers. Whether they
manufacture raw materials or move ingredients into the market as brokers
and distributors, supply companies face a number of challenges created
by growing consumer concerns over supply safety and the continued impact
of supplement good manufacturing practices on the ingredient supply
chain. Raw material suppliers also must deal with the issue of rising
input costs and the effect of currency fluctuations while facing reduced
or delayed purchase orders from their finished product customers. Read

PCGA’s Janica Lane Dishes on Nutrition Industry Investment
November 18, 2009
Signs of an economic
revival continue to bubble up but most experts agree that achieving
a full recovery will be a slow process. What does this mean for
investment activity within the U.S. nutrition industry and which sectors
are currently doing the most to whet investor
appetite. Nutrition Business Journal Editor Carlotta Mast
posed these questions to Janica Lane, a principal at Partnership Capital
Growth Advisors, during the Natural Products Expo East tradeshow in
September. Investment activity within the industry will continue to pick
up, Lane said, but transaction values will be smaller. “All the trends
have shown that smaller, mid-market companies are attracting a lot of
attention from a much wider investor set than previously,” Lane added.

to this nutrition industry investor.

NBTY Expanding Operations in
China By Employing Chinese Nationals
November 18, 2009
Hoping to capitalize on the growing disposable incomes of China’s
rapidly expanding middle class, NBTY is working to increase its
presence in the country that will soon be home to the world’s largest
economy. Although the U.S. dietary supplement leader is certainly not
alone in its desire to sell more products in China, what sets the
company apart from the competition is its desire to grow its China
business organically instead of through joint ventures, NBTY President
and Chief Financial Officer Harvey Kamil told Nutrition Business
Journal. “Many companies say they’re doing business in China but
they’re doing a joint venture,” he said. “We’re not, we’re direct
in China.” NBTY currently employs 40 Chinese nationals and hopes
to increase the presence of the Nature’s Bounty brand
throughout the country. Read
