Office Towers Don’t Have to Be New to Be Energy Efficient

Two prominent towers in the nation’s Heartland, both built in the 1980s, are demonstrating that office buildings need not be new to be energy efficient, stellar performers. The buildings are located in Louisville, Ky., and Minneapolis.
The 22-story Louisville Gas & Electric (LG&E) Center in downtown Louisville, Ky., has been named Louisville’s most efficient office building in the city’s annual Kilowatt Crackdown competition.
“This award is a reflection of our company’s commitment to the environment. We see Louisville as tomorrow’s center for sustainability and a paradigm for growing cities across the nation.” says Robert Friedman, president of Harbor Group Management Co., managing agent for the building.
Los Angeles Business and Labor Leaders Endorse $500 Million Solar Program
A coalition of business and labor leaders are asking Los Angeles officials to back an innovative solar energy program that would create $500 million in local investment and create 900 high-paying jobs annually for the next five years, with a minimal impact on ratepayers.
The Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters, the American Lung Association in California and the Sierra Club have all endorsed the CLEAN LA proposal spearheaded by the Los Angeles Business Council.
Pennsylvania Students Take Top Prize in NYU Sustainable Competition
A design called Broad VUE submitted by a team from the University of Pennsylvania School of Design & The Wharton School MBA Program won first place in an environmental real estate competition sponsored by New York University's Schack Institute of Real Estate.
The competition was open to graduate students around the world, provided an opportunity to develop innovative models of sustainable real estate development and redevelopment with other graduate students from a range of disciplines. The winning team received a prize of $25,000.
Carter to Manage Historic Spelman College Renovations
Carter, a developer and real estate service company based in Atlanta, has been selected as program manager for renovations to Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial Hall on the historic oval on Spelman College’s campus.
The 20,000-sq. ft. mixed-use renovation will include study and technology space on the main level and a 40-bed student housing area on the second and third floor.
The project is seeking LEED silver certification and is slated for completion in July 2012.
