Pritzker gave her assessment of the industry during a keynote speech last Thursday in Chicago at the annual convention of the National Investment Center for the Seniors Housing and Care Industry (NIC). "Seniors housing is a service that people will want in the future," said Pritzker in her remarks. She noted that by the year 2030, nearly 20% of the population will be age 65 or older, translating into about 71 million potential customers for the industry. The results were released at NIC's annual conference that occurred Sept. 23 through Sept. 25 at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers. Vacancies at independent living buildings now average 11.7%, up from 9.3% a year ago. Assisted living vacancies stand at 12.4%, up from 11.1% a year ago. Over the same period, nursing home vacancies rose only slightly to 10.8% from 10.2%.
