1. NYC Office of Emergency Management Coordinating Response to Crane Collapse

The around-the-clock effort continues to clean up debris left from the collapse of a crane on March 15 on Manhattan's East Side that killed six construction workers and one visitor, left 24 injured and damaged approximately 20 buildings.

2. ANSI Board Rejects Appeal to Block Construction MSD Standard

On March 13, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Board of Standards Review (BSR) rejected an appeal to withdraw the adoption of the ANSI/ASSE A10.40-2007 voluntary consensus standard "Reduction of Musculoskeletal Problems in Construction," which aims to reduce musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in the construction industry.

3. U.S. Labor Department's OSHA Cites Georgia Contractor for Fall Hazards

A Georgia-based contractor, cited in November 2007 by OSHA following a fatal Oct. 3, 2007, fall at a Niagara Falls, N.Y., hotel construction site, now faces $86,000 in additional fines for failing to correct hazards cited during an earlier OSHA inspection and for a new fall hazard.

4. New Center to Support “Green” Development

The Local Initiatives Support Corp. (LISC) announced it will support green design, construction and management principles in low- and moderate-income neighborhoods by launching the Green Development Center. Through the new center, LISC aims to develop sustainable communities that provide good places to work, live and do business.

5. “Second Responder” Bill to Provide Disaster Response Training for Construction Workers

Presidential hopeful and New York Sen. Hillary Clinton introduced legislation to establish a comprehensive national system for construction workers to assist first responders in responding to natural and man-made disasters and terrorist attacks.
