1. Will the Construction Safety Act Cost Illinois Consumers, Employers and Job Seekers?

Some contractors in Illinois are concerned about an amendment to House Bill 2094 that would create the Construction Safety Act, essentially reinstating the Structural Work Act (SWA), which was on the books for 88 years before being repealed in 1995.

2. House Subcommittee to Hold Hearing on Construction Deaths

In light of the recent construction-related deaths on the Las Vegas Strip and in New York City, the House Workforce Protections Subcommittee plans to hold a hearing to review construction safety standards and OSHA's effectiveness in overseeing them.

3. R.I. Contractor Faces Nearly $60,000 in OSHA Fines for Cave-In Hazard

OSHA cited J.A.M. Construction Co. Inc. for alleged willful, repeat and serious violations of excavation safety standards at a Newport, R.I., worksite. The Middletown, R.I., contractor faces a total of $59,500 in proposed fines.

4. CAL/OSHA: Allow Workers to Acclimate to Heat

With the weather heating up, the Department of Industrial Relations’ Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DIR/DOSH), also known as Cal/OSHA, informs employers that allowing their employees to acclimate to the heat is one of the best defenses against heat-related illnesses and fatalities.

5. New Alliance Addresses NYC Construction Hazards

OSHA and the New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC) formed an alliance to address construction hazards in the city’s five boroughs, with plans to cross-train their inspectors and managers on each agency’s construction safety standards, regulations and procedures.

6. OSHA Proposes $115,000 in Penalties against Hollywood, Fla., Contractor

OSHA has proposed $115,000 in penalties against John Moriarty & Associates of Florida Inc. (JMAF) for two alleged willful and one serious violation of OSHA standards uncovered during an inspection of the company's construction site in Miami.
