The Robotics and Mechanisms Laboratory (RoMeLa) of the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech won the grand prize at the 2008 International Capstone Design Fair with a trio of robots designed to take the place of construction workers tasked with dangerous jobs such as inspecting high-rises or underwater bridge piers.

3. Rhode Island Contractor Faces $216,000 in OSHA Fines for Cave-In Hazards

OSHA cited John Rocchio Corp. of Smithfield, R.I., for alleged willful and serious violations of excavation safety standards at a North Kingstown, R.I., worksite. The company faces a total of $216,000 in proposed penalties.

The rule revises OSHA standards to clarify that employers must provide PPE and hazards training for each employee covered by the standards.

The National Demolition Association, the trade organization for the global demolition industry, is planning for an inaugural International Symposium on the State of C&D (Construction & Demolition) Recycling, to be held in Chicago in the fall of 2009.
