2. Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries Shows
a Decline in Worker Deaths
The Bureau of Labor Statistics on Aug. 20 released a report showing
a decline of 6 percent in worker fatalities in 2006. The good news was
tempered slightly, however, by increases in fatal falls, an increased
number of fatal incidents involving police officers and the highest
number of fatalities among African American workers since 1999.

3. ASSE Suggest Changes To Proposed Confined
Space Standard
American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) member Gary Lopez, CSP,
suggested changes for OSHA’s proposed Confined Spaces in Construction
Standard, a rule he said is complicated, introduces unnecessary new
terminology, inadequately addresses several important confined space
issues and fails to recognize current, widely understood safety
practices.

For two weeks beginning July 23, OSHA will bring a dozen additional

Is Safety About Achieving Success or Avoiding
Failure?
We have defined safety for so long as the lack of accidents that
we are beginning to lose sight of the objective. When accidents go away
for a while is it because of safety success or is it simply luck or
normal variation? This webinar explores what safety might look like
rather than simply the lack of accidents.
Learn the ten signs that safety is at work in your organization and how
to tell if the accidents are responding to your efforts or other
forces.
Presented by Terry L. Mathis, CEO, ProAct Safety, Inc. Terry is
a former Director of Training for Coca-Cola where he developed several
innovative approaches to safety. He has since worked for two of
the major safety consulting companies before starting ProAct Safety
(formerly Integrated Performance Technologies), Inc. in 1994. He
is a veteran of over 700 safety improvement projects in 18 countries
and 12 languages, has spoken at ASSE (2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006,
2007, and 2008), ASSE's Regional Conferences and Seminar Fest, National
Quarry Safety Association (2000), Human Resource Safety Conference
(1999) and various other safety and training functions. He is a
professional member of ASSE.
