2. OSHA Cites Baton Rouge Employers $112,000 for Alleged Asbestos Violations

OSHA has cited Louisiana Health Care Consultants LLC, Dean Building Holdings and Bob Dean Enterprises Inc. for three alleged willful and 10 alleged serious violations of federal health and safety regulations. Proposed penalties total $112,000.

3. OSHA Recognizes Aker Construction Inc. for Success on Longview Power Project

OSHA has certified the Longview Power Project, managed by Aker Construction Inc., as a new star site, the highest in its prestigious Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP).

4. Solis Announces Texas Construction Safety Initiative

U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis addressed thousands of attendees at the opening session of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Safety 2009 in San Antonio, where she introduced a new construction safety initiative in Texas and stressed the importance of workplace health and safety.

5. Good Ergonomics is Good Economics

It's been my experience that most injury incidents and their inherent costs are caused by a mismatch in task requirements and human capability. This is confirmed by the most recent Workplace Safety Index produced by Liberty Mutual, which included a listing of the top 10 causes of the most disabling workplace injuries. The No. 1 cause was overexertion (i.e., lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, etc.), which accounted for 25.7 percent of the estimated $48.6 billion of direct workers' compensation costs to U.S. businesses. The simple conclusion is that our workplaces are demanding more power than human muscles and joints can give.
