1. OSHA Launches Regional Emphasis Program for Recovery Act Construction Projects

The OSHA regional office in Denver recently launched a regional emphasis program in Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana aimed at ensuring workers involved in work funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 are properly protected from occupational hazards that may lead to injuries or illnesses.

3. OSHA Cites Texas Contractor $133,000 Following a Fatality

OSHA has cited Tyler, Texas-based Thedford Construction Co. Inc. with two alleged willful and 10 alleged serious violations following the electrocution death of a Hispanic worker at the company's worksite in Tyler.

4. American Society of Safety Engineers Unveils New Workplace Fall Prevention Standards

As slips, trips and falls continue to represent significant exposures and hazards in the workplace, the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) recently announced the approval of three new fall protection standards by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), aimed at preventing these hazards in the workplace. The three standards are: ANSI/ASSE Z359.6-2009, “Specification and Design Requirements for Active Fall Protection Systems;” ANSI/ASSE Z359.12-2009, “Connecting Components for Personal Fall Arrest Systems;” and ANSI/ASSE Z359.13-2009, “Personal Energy Absorbers and Energy Absorbing Lanyards.”

5. Supervisory Safety Coaching: Growing a Safety Culture from the Middle Out

Most safety culture improvement initiatives either start at the top or the bottom of the organizational structure, with executive coaching for senior managers or work force teambuilding for the rank and file. Some experts believe that safety begins with leadership; others stress that worker behavior has the most impact on safety. Both approaches can achieve improvement. However, there are organizations with good reasons to delay these approaches and start safety improvement in the middle.
