1. OSHA Revises Steel Erection Compliance Directive Related to Fall Protection

OSHA recently revised the steel erection compliance directive for the agency’s Steel Erection Standard to change two enforcement policies related to tripping hazards and installation of nets or floors during steel erection.

2. Keeping Employees Drug-Free

In today’s sluggish economy, most companies are exploring ways they can reduce inventory, personnel and expenses in general. But according to an executive with a Chicago construction association, many businesses may be overlooking a prime cost-saving measure: keeping employees drug-free.

3. OSHA Releases Guidance for Silica Control in Construction

OSHA recently published “Controlling Silica Exposures in Construction,” a guidance document that addresses the control of worker exposure to dust containing crystalline silica, which is known to cause the lung disease silicosis.

4. Massachusetts Contractor Faces more than $69,000 in OSHA Fines

OSHA has cited Lawrence-Lynch Corp. of Falmouth, Mass., for alleged willful and serious violations of safety standards following an excavation collapse at a worksite at 396 Gifford St. in Kingston, Mass. The construction contractor faces a total of $69,300 in proposed fines.

5. OSHA Launches National Emphasis Program on Recordkeeping

On Oct. 1, OSHA announced it is initiating a national emphasis program (NEP) on recordkeeping to assess the accuracy of injury and illness data recorded by employers.

6. OSHA Cites Two Companies for Fall Hazards at Colorado Worksite

OSHA's Englewood (Colorado) Area Office has cited two Texas-based companies, United Renovations and ABC Roofing, with penalties of $59,000 and $38,750, respectively, for violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act related to fall hazards uncovered at an Aurora, Colo., worksite.
