Studies continue to support that exercise at any age provides multiple benefits even beyond weight control and weight loss, from preventing osteoporosis to relieving stress and promoting heart health.

2. Winter Weather presents Osteoporosis and Foot and Ankle Fracture Danger for Older Workers

Falls and winter ice can be dangerous, especially to older workers, who have special concerns about slipping and falling on an icy patch of ground. The American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) also is concerned about the increased dangers to older workers with osteoporosis (progressive bone loss) and the possibility of fractures to the foot or ankle, which often happen from falls on icy surfaces.

The Center for Health Value Innovation recently announced its 2009 Executive Board of the Board of Directors, a team of thought leaders poised to help raise awareness and adoption of value-based health care benefits design at a time when the Center says organizations, employers and the country need it most.

Companies spend about $170 billion a year on costs associated with workplace injuries and illnesses, and almost $1 billion every week to injured employees and their medical providers, according to Warren K. Brown, president of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE).

5. NSC Introduces Distracted Driving Resource Kit

In January, the National Safety Council (NSC) became the first organization to call for a nationwide ban on motorists' use of cell phones and messaging devices while driving, and urged businesses and legislators to enact policies prohibiting the practice. NSC is now offering a Distracted Driving Resource Kit for companies ready to educate employees about their risks.
