1. AIHA Executive Director Departs, New Director Hired
The American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) announced Oct. 27 that Steven H. Davis, CAE, IOM, will depart AIHA on March 31, 2009, after 11 years of service to the organization, the last 6 as executive director.

2. European Organizations Work to Promote Safe Workplaces
Nine pan-European and multinational organizations have signed up to be part of the first wave of official partners of Healthy Workplaces, a campaign organized by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) that focuses on the evaluation of health and safety risks and aims at reducing work-related accidents and illnesses.

3. MSHA Announces Initiative to Bolster Mine Safety
MSHA recently unveiled the Safety Targets Training Program, a new safety initiative designed to highlight and eliminate the leading causes of mine fatalities in the 21st century.

Employers and employees will receive valuable workplace safety and health information and training resources on general industry, construction and emergency response issues through a renewed alliance signed Oct. 27 between OSHA and the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA).

5. BLS Releases 2007 Workplace Injury and Illness Rates
The rate of workplace injuries and illnesses in private industry declined in 2007 for the sixth consecutive year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported. Nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses fell from 4.4 cases per 100 workers in 2006 to 4.2 cases in 2007.

6. "Clean" Nanoscale Production Not Always a Reality
New research published in a special issue of the Journal of Industrial Ecology shows that environmental gains derived from the use of nanomaterials may be offset in part by the processes used to manufacture them. The studies highlight the need for improved efficiency in nanoscale material manufacturing to reduce energy use, emissions, solid waste and the use of toxic input materials.
