Lynn C. Woolsey, chairwoman of the Committee on Education and Labor's Subcommittee on Workforce Protections.

3. OSHA Launches Regional Program to Reduce Lead Exposure in the Workplace
The OSHA office in Kansas City, Mo., announced a special regional emphasis program aimed at reducing occupational exposure to lead, one of the leading causes of workplace illnesses, for workplaces under OSHA's jurisdiction in the Midwestern states of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska.

4. Research Examines the Financial, Health Costs of Coal Mining
The costs of illness and premature deaths in Appalachia related to coal mining far outweigh economic benefits the industry brings to the region, said Michael Hendryx, Ph.D., associate director of the West Virginia University Institute for Health Policy Research, in a new study published in the journal Public Health Reports.

Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., says a new report questioning the effectiveness of next-generation radiation portal monitors means the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) must develop better technology to prevent terrorists from smuggling nuclear weapons across our borders.

Casino workers face a higher risk of heart disease and lung cancer because they work in buildings filled with tobacco smoke, suggests new research appearing in the August issue of the American Journal of Public Health.
