WEEKLY NEWS
1. Simple Solutions for Office Hazards
Office work spaces often have overlooked hazards that threaten the physical well-being of all who enter. Company co-workers or, if work is done from a home office, family members and pets, unknowingly can be in harm's way. While some threats are fairly obvious, others can lurk in the most unexpected places.

2. Lawmakers Introduce Bill to Prevent More Dust Explosions
Two lawmakers have introduced legislation that would compel OSHA to issue measures regulating combustible industrial dusts. The lawmakers hope the legislation will prevent explosions such as the one that took place at the Ga.-based Imperial Sugar refinery in early February that killed 12 workers and critically injured 11 others.

3. Protective Clothing and the Quest for Improved Performance
Wooed by the high-performance clothing worn by runners, skiers, NASCAR drivers and other sporting enthusiasts, workers are demanding high-tech solutions to the age-old problem of comfort.

4. Whitmore: OSHA Turns Blind Eye to Underreporting
An OSHA recordkeeping expert alleges the agency has been "turning its back" on verifying the accuracy of injury and illness records submitted by employers, and claims this has led to significant underreporting during the past 15 years.

5. ASPH: 250,000 Public Health Workers Needed by 2020
According to an assessment conducted by the Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH), the United States needs more than 250,000 additional public health workers by 2020 to avoid a major public health crisis.

6. 800,000 Eye Injuries Occur Annually, 90% are Preventable
Every year, 800,000 eye injuries occur on the job, including 36,000 that require time off from work. But according to eye health and safety organization Prevent Blindness America, wearing proper eye protection can prevent 90 percent of all eye injuries.

Welcome to Quest Technologies Popquiz Challenge!

Take the test and you may win a NoisePro DL Unit!
Here is a sneak peek at questions 1 & 2.

1) Under U.S. OSHA regulations, the Permissible Exposure Level (PEL) of occupational noise is 90 dBA for eight hours and equates to 100% dose exposure. The Action Level to place employees in a hearing conservation program is 85 dBA during an eight hour shift. What is the percentage dose exposure of the Action Level?
(a) 90%
(b) 85%
(c) 50%
(d) 95%

2) Do some workers risk puncturing their eardrums with insert type ear plugs?
(a) Yes, you must be very careful not to push the earplug in too far.
(b) No, it's not likely since ear plugs are less than 3/4 inch long and the eardrum lies more than 1 inch deep inside the curvy ear canal.
(c) Yes, but only if inserting on a hot and humid day and pushing extra hard to insert.
(d) No, the eardrum is too tough for earplugs to puncture it.
