WEEKLY NEWS
1. MSHA Negligent in Protecting Crandall Canyon Miners
In a report examining the roof control plan for Crandall Canyon Mine, where six miners and three rescuers perished in August 2007, the Department of Labor’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) concluded that MSHA was negligent in protecting the safety of miners.

2. Survey: Workers Motivated by Wellness Program Incentives
A new survey from the Guardian Life Insurance Company of America revealed that 68 percent of U.S. workers believe that cash, gifts, extra vacation days and other incentives can help them make healthier long-term lifestyle choices, such as eating properly, exercising and quitting smoking.

3. Tougher Penalties, Worker Safety Laws Discussed at Senate Hearing
Companies demonstrating a “dangerous pattern of disregarding worker safety” must receive stricter penalties and stronger criminal provisions, a trade union expert told members of the Senate Employment and Workplace Protections Subcommittee of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee during an April 1 hearing.

For example, the Black Lung Program – a temporary program for disabled coal miners – paid $41 billion in benefits, more than 13 times initial estimates of $3 billion.

6. New Warehouse Design Boosts Productivity
A Wisconsin-based power generator manufacturer recently implemented an alternative warehouse design, featuring a non-traditional aisle and rack system, to increase productivity, reduce travel distances and maintain a safe work environment.

7. Alcoholism Prevalent Among Hospitality Workers, Study Says
In a new study, George Washington University researchers concluded that 15 percent of workers in the hospitality/leisure industry suffer from serious alcohol-related problems, resulting in the highest alcohol dependence rate of all studied sectors.
