1. ASSE Urges Bush to Reinstate Howard as NIOSH Head
The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) urged President George W. Bush to consider renewing National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Director John Howard's position as agency head after learning the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is not renewing his 6-year appointment.

3. Researchers Identify Pork Plant Illness
Researchers recently identified the neurological illness that affected workers at several pork processing plants as immune-mediated polyradiculoneuropathy, or progressive inflammatory neuropathy, a disease of the peripheral nerves and spinal nerve roots.

4. Cirque du Soleil Considers Injury Prevention Program
A new study reveals that performers in Cirque du Soleil shows – known for acrobatic performances that blend theater and circus acts – exhibit the same patterns of injuries found in elite athletes. The study is the first step in developing an injury prevention program to document the frequency and types of injuries that occur among artists in performance companies.

5. ACOEM Launches Workplace Health and Productivity Toolkit
The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) launched its new Health and Productivity Toolkit, an educational Web site designed to promote the principles of Health and Productivity Management (HPM) in workplaces around the world.

6. NYC Code Provides the Sound of Things to Come
New York City's noise ordinance may become the model for new city and state codes across the country.

7. Study: Employees with ADHD Work Fewer Days Per Year
Employers may want to consider screening workers for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as new research suggests that employees with the disorder work 22 fewer days a year than other workers.
