WEEKLY NEWS
1. America's Safest Companies: Building a Culture of Responsibility
Occupational Hazards, the magazine of safety, health and loss prevention (which recently was rebranded as EHS Today), is proud to announce that 18 companies have been named to the 2008 list of America's Safest Companies. Together, these companies provide a safe working environment for nearly 275,000 employees.

EHS SOLUTION

Coastal Training Technologies has released a timely program to address an issue that puts thousands of facilities and their surrounding communities at risk. Combustible Dust: Up In A Flash explores the nature of dust explosions and examines how they can be prevented.

Providing superb introduction to the problem, Combustible Dust: Up In A Flash pinpoints the types of dust prone to ignition and cites the five elements needed for an explosion: oxygen, heat, fuel, dispersion and confinement. The program explores where and how explosions can occur and examines the focus of the hazard assessment process: materials, operations, physical spaces (hidden or otherwise) and potential ignition sources. Combustible Dust: Up In A Flash also advocates the use of MSDS as part of a hazard communication program as well as hotwork and confined space permits. Most importantly, it illustrates ways to prevent dust explosions, citing housekeeping measures, proper ventilation, engineering controls, personal protective equipment, and injury-and-damage regulation.

For more information on Combustible Dust: Up In A Flash, call 877-COASTAL, fax 757-306-2532, e-mail sales@coastal.com or visit www.coastal.com. The program is available for free 7-day preview.

Coastal Training Technologies Corp. is the world’s leading publisher of safety, industrial skills and employee development training programs. Since 1984, more than 200,000 training professionals have relied on Coastal’s award-winning products to enrich the lives of more than 30 million employees worldwide.

2.Penton Media Announces Rebranding of Occupational Hazards as EHS Today
Penton Media's Occupational Hazards, the award-winning 70-year-old publication serving the occupational safety and health market, is being rebranded in November as EHS Today. The publication also launched a completely redesigned Web site, www.EHSToday.com, which provides comprehensive coverage of environment, health and safety topics.

3. NSC: The Future of OSHA
Three safety and labor stakeholders convened at the National Safety Council (NSC) Congress and Expo in Anaheim, Calif., to discuss what may be in store for OSHA in the future, and how certain changes can impact both the agency and occupational safety and health in general.

4. R&D Drives Hand Protection Innovation
Putting a general purpose concept glove through the rigors of product testing may not get your heart racing the way a car crash test dummy can, but it is every bit as important.

Quantifying Noise, Assessing Exposure, & Evaluating Results
    Sponsored By: Quest Technologies

The human ear is an intricate, highly sensitive yet incredibly durable system with extraordinary capabilities. Noise surrounds us at all times, including in the workplace, while commuting, as we are entertained, and even as we try to rest. It is not surprising that noise is one of the most pervasive health hazards found in our lives.

This one hour presentation looked at the importance of measuring noise, discussed various noise assessment methods, and provided a look at sample noise results. The webinar was designed to discuss sound measurement for hearing conservation program exposure assessment through both noise dosimetry and task-based analysis, measures for noise control applications and environmental or community noise metrics.

Is Safety About Achieving Success or Avoiding Failure?
    Sponsored By: ProAct Safety

We have defined safety for so long as the lack of accidents that we are beginning to lose sight of the objective. When accidents go away for a while is it because of safety success or is it simply luck or normal variation? This webinar explores what safety might look like rather than simply the lack of accidents.

Learn the ten signs that safety is at work in your organization and how to tell if the accidents are responding to your efforts or other forces.
