WEEKLY NEWS
1. EPA: Industry Makes Green While Going Green
A new report from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reveals that major manufacturing and business sectors are improving environmental performance to cut waste, improve economic competitiveness and gain other important benefits.

EHS SOLUTION

Coastal Training Technologies has released a timely program to address an issue that puts thousands of facilities and their surrounding communities at risk. Combustible Dust: Up In A Flash explores the nature of dust explosions and examines how they can be prevented.

Providing superb introduction to the problem, Combustible Dust: Up In A Flash pinpoints the types of dust prone to ignition and cites the five elements needed for an explosion: oxygen, heat, fuel, dispersion and confinement. The program explores where and how explosions can occur and examines the focus of the hazard assessment process: materials, operations, physical spaces (hidden or otherwise) and potential ignition sources. Combustible Dust: Up In A Flash also advocates the use of MSDS as part of a hazard communication program as well as hotwork and confined space permits. Most importantly, it illustrates ways to prevent dust explosions, citing housekeeping measures, proper ventilation, engineering controls, personal protective equipment, and injury-and-damage regulation.

For more information on Combustible Dust: Up In A Flash, call 877-COASTAL, fax 757-306-2532, e-mail sales@coastal.com or visit www.coastal.com. The program is available for free 7-day preview.

Coastal Training Technologies Corp. is the world’s leading publisher of safety, industrial skills and employee development training programs. Since 1984, more than 200,000 training professionals have relied on Coastal’s award-winning products to enrich the lives of more than 30 million employees worldwide.

2. Watch Out: The Importance of Protecting Your Eyes In the Industrial Workplace
To anyone who thinks eye protection may not be a crucial component of PPE in the workplace, think again. Nearly three out of five injured workers were not wearing eye protection at the time of the accident or were wearing the wrong kind of eye protection for the job. Eye injuries alone cost more than $300 million per year in lost production time, medical expenses and worker compensation.

3. OSHA: Falls, Electrical, Scaffold and Rigging Violations Top Cited Hazards in NYC
Fall hazards were the most frequently cited violation found at New York City construction sites by OSHA during a two-week enhanced enforcement effort this past summer.

4. International Safety: ILO Calls for Urgent Measures to Address Global Financial Crisis
International Labour Office (ILO) Director-General Juan Somavia called for a series of coordinated financial, social, regulatory and development measures to avert a slide into recession and address the “grave” consequences of the global financial crisis that could include fewer resources for worker safety and training.

5. EPA, DOJ and State of Illinois Reach Agreement with Crane Composites on Clean Air Act Violations
The Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Justice and the state of Illinois have reached an agreement with Crane Composites, a fiberglass panel manufacturer formerly known as Kemlite Inc., on alleged violations of the Clean Air Act at the company's plastics manufacturing plant in Channahon, Ill.

6. TECO Employees Flip for Safety Coins
TECO Peoples Gas in Florida employs nearly 600 workers. Since many of these employees work with natural gas, their jobs inherently are dangerous. So, safety is very important. In fact, safety is so important that it is one of TECO's five core values.
