1. OSHA Highlights Enforcement Results for FY 2008
In the wake of recent criticism of OSHA’s performance under the Bush administration, the agency announced that it continued to exceed its enforcement goals during Fiscal Year (FY) 2008. The agency cited new data showing it surpassed inspection goals, logged a high proportion of “serious” violations and made more criminal referrals than during any previous administration.

2. Tyson Foods Pleads Guilty, Agrees to Pay $500,000 Fine for Violation that Led to Worker Fatality
On Jan. 6, Tyson Foods Inc. pleaded guilty and agreed to pay the maximum fine of $500,000 for willfully violating worker safety regulations that led to a 2003 fatality in its River Valley Animal Foods (RVAF) plant in Texarkana, Ark., according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

From basic measures like composting cafeteria waste to large-scale technology programs such as recovering metal from used computers, manufacturers around the world are incorporating environmental sustainability in day-to-day operations.

4. MassCOSH, National COSH Release Worker Safety Recommendations for Obama Administration
On Jan. 6, the Massachusetts Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health (MassCOSH) and its national association, the National Council on Occupational Safety and Health (National COSH), released a platform outlining seven priorities for federal action in 2009 to protect worker health and safety.

5. Back Pain and How to Prevent it in 2009
Back pain is the most disabling pain experienced by Americans and, according to the National Institutes of Health, eight out of 10 people will suffer from it at some time.

6. California ASSE Committee Rallies for John Howard to be Appointed Head of OSHA
The California Governmental Affairs Committee (CGAC) of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) sent a Dec. 22 letter to U.S. Secretary of Labor Designate Rep. Hilda Solis requesting the incoming administration appoint Dr. John Howard as Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA.
