New UPS Product Directory Enables Buyers to Research Models Online
UPSonNet, a power protection consulting and UPS industry information source, recently launched a new online resource to help electrical professionals compare the features of UPS products. The company’s new product directory enables potential buyers of UPS systems to see offerings from different manufacturers at a glance, link to spec sheets, and contact relevant professional suppliers.

The first category featured on the site covers rack-mount online single-phase 120V UPS systems. According to the company, the decision to start with this topology was based on new Energy Star standards, which require users to eliminate grid-polluting harmonics from computer servers by correcting server's power factor from the existing figure of 0.7 up to 0.95.

The site also offers a newsletter, which reviews different editorial topics, including Procuring UPS Systems on the Web from the August edition.

What is your electrical system hiding? A computer locks up. Lights flicker. A motor overheats. Just random events? They could be signs of power problems – which can cause costly downtime, data loss, excess power consumption, and equipment repair and replacement. Problems no one can afford. Report Predicts Significant Increase in Microgrid Investment
The obsolete electrical grid infrastructure in many countries is attracting the attention of technology companies, utilities, and policy makers looking to spur investment in Smart Grid enhancements. According to the new report, “Microgrids,” from market research firm Pike Research, Boulder, Colo., one key manifestation of that trend in the coming years will be the accelerated deployment of microgrids, which are “islanded” power generation and distribution areas that can operate autonomously from the larger grid infrastructure. The cleantech market intelligence firm forecasts that more than 3 GW of new microgrid capacity will come online globally by 2015, representing a cumulative investment of $7.8 billion by that time — and an annual market for microgrid systems of $2.1 billion.

According to the report, North America will be the largest market for microgrids over the next several years, representing 74% of total worldwide capacity by 2015. In North America, the largest segment will be institutional microgrids, followed by commercial/industrial and community grids. Providing analysis on five major segments of the emerging microgrid market, the report also examines key technologies that are integral to microgrid deployments and assesses key players in the nascent industry ecosystem.

An executive summary is available for free download on the firm’s Web site, or you can register and purchase the full report for a fee.

    New Products & Services
    Energy-efficient UPS
In an effort to further its green initiative, Tripp Lite has developed its latest line of SmartOnline single-phase UPS systems to incorporate an economy mode function. Operating in this mode, the series offers an efficiency rating of up to 97%. According to the company, this leads to less heat buildup in data centers, lower energy consumption, and significant savings in both cooling and energy costs. Single-phase rack/tower and tower models, all of which are RoHS compliant, are available with capacities from 1000VA to 16kVA. Hot-swappable modular models can be fully serviced, including complete replacement, without downtime impacts on mission-critical equipment.

    Flywheel
Pentadyne Power Corp. recently introduced its next generation in flywheel technology for uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems. Ideally suited for mission-critical load applications, the new GTX flywheel delivers 25% more energy storage than previous models. This increase in energy storage allows UPS customers to reduce the number of flywheels and the cost needed to bridge the gap between utility power losses and transition to a backup generator system. According to the company, this product is unique in that it operates with no bearings and no vacuum pump, making the flywheel highly reliable and virtually maintenance free.
