IEEE Announces Smart Grid
Communications Conference Call for Papers
Developing the Smart Grid has become an urgent global
priority. As a result, information and communications technologies are
at the core of the Smart Grid vision, as they will empower the grid
with
the capability of supporting two-way energy and information flow,
isolating and restoring power outages more quickly, facilitating the
integration of renewable energy sources into the grid, and empowering
the consumer with tools for optimizing energy consumption.
Answering this call, the first IEEE International Conference on
Smart
Grid Communications (SmartGridComm 2010) will be held October 4-6 at
the
National Institute of Science & Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Md.
The event was developed to bring together researchers from academia,
industry, and
national labs to exchange ideas, explore enabling technologies, discuss
innovative designs, and share field trial experiences and lessons
learned.
Prospective authors are invited to submit original contributions
(standard two-column IEEE format and up to six pages) through May 1 on
all aspects of Smart Grid Communications. For a list of possible
topics,
plus key deadline dates, visit the IEEE Web site.

What is your electrical system hiding? A computer
locks
up. Lights flicker. A motor overheats. Just random events? They could
be
signs of power problems – which can cause costly downtime, data loss,
excess power consumption, and equipment repair and replacement.
Problems
no one can afford. Visit www.HiddenPowerProblems.com

ComEd Hits Performance Milestone in
2009
Commonwealth Edison Company (ComEd), a unit of
Chicago-based Exelon Corp., one of the nation’s largest electric
utilities with approximately 5.4 million customers, had its best
reliability performance on record in 2009. Delivering electric service
to customers 99.9% of the time, with fewer outages recorded than at any
other time, ComEd also improved its safety record during the process.
ComEd system improvements resulted in:
- Customers experiencing half as many service interruptions in
2009 (an average of one interruption) as compared to 1998 (more than
two
interruptions).
- Power was restored more than an hour faster than in 2008, which
also
represented a nearly 60% improvement since 1998.
According to Terence Donnelly, executive vice president of operations at
ComEd, the company invested more than $6 billion since 2001 to expand
and upgrade its delivery system. For example, he pointed to a
$26-million effort to proactively replace and reinforce more than 1
million feet of underground cable across the ComEd system. This effort
included use of an innovative new silicone injection technique that
strengthens the cable and can add 20 years to the life span of existing
cable.
