Earthquake Ripples Through Western
Power Grid
On April 4, a powerful earthquake (rated at 7.2 on the
Richter Scale) hammered the town of Mexicali on the Mexico-California
border. Although there were few casualties and property damage was
limited, the earthquake caused an unusual frequency disturbance
throughout the Western U.S. Interconnect grid. The frequency
disturbance, an abrupt drop to 59.89 Hz followed by a slow recovery
with
an overshoot to 60.09 Hz, was probably caused by one or more large
generators suddenly dropping off the grid, according to Power Standards
Lab, Alameda, Calif.
Captured by PQube power quality instruments located throughout the
grid, the disturbance provides
a
graphic demonstration of the fact that even huge grids with hundreds of
generators operate at a single time-varying frequency. The western grid
really is "one single huge machine." For more information, read the
entire report
from Power Standards Lab.
