Michelle Kwan Skates Away with Disney Deal
Michelle Kwan
Figure skater Michelle Kwan signed a deal with The Walt Disney Co. to act as a celebrity spokesperson, the company said last week.

Under the multi-year agreement, Kwan will be featured in Disney ads and media promotions and will make guest appearances at live Disney events. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Kwan is no stranger to Disney. Disney Publishing Worldwide published Kwan's fictional book series Michelle Kwan Presents Skating Dreams. Kwan has also appeared in ABC and Disney TV specials, including a primetime special based on Disney's animated movie Mulan.

GM Names New Marketing and Advertising Exec
In yet another wave of changes, General Motors has hired Mike Jackson, GM's Western regional general manager, as VP-marketing and advertising. The post takes effect March 1.

Jackson will replace Brent Dewar who will move to a special assignment pending his retirement later this year, the company said.

Gillette and Schick Settle: Gillette Holds Flip Card Stunt

After years of legal wrangling, Gillette and Schick have reportedly reached a settlement that puts an end to the majority of long-running disputes over patents and advertising claims.

The matter was settled out of court last week with terms confidential, according to news reports. The two said they would end their courtroom battle, but continue the fight in the marketplace.

RadioShack to Close 400 to 700 Stores

RadioShack Corp. will close 400 to 700 stores as part of its plan to turn around slow sales growth.

The retailer plans to expand its kiosk business and shift full-size stores to better real estate as part of its 18-month plan. RadioShack also will dump slow-moving products to stock more quick-turnover items in high-growth categories. (RadioShack also will close distribution centers in Charleston, SC and Southhaven, MS.)

CARU Takes Kellogg to Task for 'Bad' Apple Ads

Kellogg is under fire for disparaging apples.

The Children's Advertising Review Unit recommended that Kellogg discontinue its ad campaign for Apple Jacks cereal that feature a cinnamon stick and a grouchy apple. It also suggested that Kellogg refrain from "denigrating or disparaging" apples and implying that cinnamon gives the cereal its sweet taste.

NBA, PSP Deliver Games on the Go

Thanks to a partnership between the National Basketball Association and Sony Computer Entertainment America, Inc., gamers can download highlights of the weekend-long events on to their PlayStation Portable devices in what's dubbed "NBA All-Star Weekend to Go."

Connecticut, Hawaii Introduce Child No-E-mail Legislation

(Direct Newsline)—Connecticut and Hawaii have added their weight to the legislative onslaught against legal, adult content in commercial electronic mail and introduced so-called child-protection do-not-e-mail bills.

However, Hawaii's bill contains what appears to be a typographical error that would set the fee too low to make its registry viable. The typo mirrors one that delayed a similar law in Michigan.

ZOUP-AH LLC: an entertainment and brand development company, has partnered with San Francisco-based Lark Creek Restaurant Group to roll out a line of themed restaurants based on the Gaspergoo TV series. The interactive restaurants will reflect the Gaspergoo program. The first restaurant is expected to open in 2007. The location has yet to be announced.

TEXAS INSTRUMENTS: is teaming up with the CBS series Numb3rs to launch a sweepstakes that will send teens and their math teachers to Hollywood. To enter, students log on to CBS.com and register. The sweeps is part of Texas Instruments We All sue Math Every Day math initiative. One grand-prize winner gets a four-day trip for four to Hollywood, a meet-and-greet with a Numb3rs cast member and a chance to visit the show's filming location. One teacher will win a trip to Hollywood plus a walk-on role on Numb3rs. The sweepstakes runs through March 15. Online materials support.

NATIONAL IN-STORE: Sarasota, FL, hired Cheryl Blau as director of events business development, a new post at the Omnicom-owned retail services agency. Blau is a 21-year veteran of Procter & Gamble, with posts in brand management as well as retail promotions and events, including work on the launches of Swiffer and Febreze. National In-Store, part of Omnicom's Radiate Retail Group, earlier this month hired Andrea Young as VP-business development for the western U.S., a new post.
