A New Virtual World Symphony
In its ongoing effort to prove itself an environment worthy of advertisers’ attention—and not just a repository for dramatic prairie dogs and spaghetti cats—YouTube is running an online audition/ contest to bring musicians from around the world to play a short orchestral piece by composer Tan Dun at Carnegie Hall next April. Applicants can enter using whatever instruments they like, as long as they fit the range and pitch of the work. It’s an interesting example of how to assemble a solid user-generated campaign using video and downloadable materials, and will probably turn into the most widespread global UGC promotion ever attempted. E-Cards that Speak Volumes
It’s a sign of the times that even the holiday cards from interactive agencies have to do more than wish you happy holidays or make your elf self shake a tail feather. Several of the e-greetings I’ve received this year not only extend the best of the season but demonstrate what these firms can do with a little Flash animation, some viral marketing or mobile application, and a good deal of creativity. A Booty Call You Can Count On
Yep, that’s what it’s called: Booty Caller, a mobile alert service offered by parenting portal www.BabyCenter.com that keeps women advised when their monthly ovulation cycles are about to begin, at their peak or about to end. It’s sponsored by First Response, the pregnancy test brand, and seems an excellent example of the type of mobile service that could build a lot of loyalty among those who need it.
