US
Foodservice-Atlanta begins fueling its fleet with biodiesel
US Foodservice-Atlanta has become the first major
foodservice distributor in Georgia to run its entire delivery fleet on
biodiesel fuel.
All of the Atlanta division’s 185 tractors and 210 trailers began
using biodiesel fuel recently after its first 7,500-gallon delivery of
B5, a blend of diesel containing 5% biodiesel, a form of diesel fuel
made from vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled restaurant greases.
Biodiesel is a sustainable, renewable alternative to diesel fuel that
can reduce greenhouse gases and other emissions.
Small
number of fleets buying trailers negatively affects index
The Q4 2009 FSR Equipment Buying Index as reported by CK
Commercial Vehicle Research fell 23% from the previous quarter to a
reading of 68.7. The Q4 2009 index was severely impacted by the small
percentage of fleets planning trailer purchases.
Only 21% of respondents to the Q4 Fleet Sentiment questionnaire
indicated they planned to place orders for trailers in the next three
months, while 46% planned to place power unit orders in the same period.
Revised
FDA Food Code includes enhancements in safety, efficiency
The Food and Drug Administration has published the new
FDA Food Code, a model code and reference document that provides a
scientifically sound technical and legal basis for regulating the retail
food and foodservice segment.
State, city, county, tribal, and territorial agencies regulate more
than one million restaurants, retail food stores, and vending and
foodservice operations in institutions such as schools, hospitals,
nursing homes, and child care centers. The model FDA Food Code provides
a basis for most of those agencies’ licensing, inspection, and
enforcement activities, and offers a model for food statutes,
regulations, and ordinances.

Webinars
Webinar on California TRU
emission regulations
Refrigerated Transporter recently put on a
webinar entitled “California emissions regulations for transport
refrigeration units.”
This webinar, with officials from the California Air Resources Board
(CARB), covered all facets of CARB’s Airborne Toxic Control Measure
for In-Use Diesel-Fueled Transport Refrigeration Units (TRU) and TRU
genset regulations.
Particular attention was paid to how the phased-in compliance
works, and to the various options for meeting engine performance
standards.
There was also the opportunity for attendees to have their
questions on the matter answered.
A recording of the webinar, which was sponsored by Johnson Truck
Bodies, Proventia, and Reviva, is available at http://refrigeratedtrans.com/webinars/.
Johnson Refrigerated Truck Bodies offers a full line of
refrigerated truck bodies and all-electric truck refrigeration
solutions, including the new RouteMax clean and green refrigeration
system.
Proventia develops diesel emission control systems to meet CARB
regulations, including the CARB-approved Proventia Flow Through Filter
for TRUs.
Reviva, the largest independent remanufacturer of gas and diesel
engines in North America, is now offering CARB-approved remanufactured
diesel-fueled TRU engines.
