US Foods activates solar power
system at Phoenix AZ division
Continuing its commitment to sustainability, US Foods recently activated a 905-kilowatt photovoltaic solar panel system at its Phoenix AZ division. The solar array is the foodservice distributor’s third installation, including a panel in San Francisco and La Mirada CA, and one of the largest rooftop installations in Phoenix. It is expected to provide 15% of the division’s power needs annually.

awards for excellence
C R England, a Salt Lake City UT-based global transportation provider, has received the Chiquita Cold Chain Carrier of the Year Award. This award selects a carrier each year that provides Chiquita Brands International with exemplary temperature-controlled carrier services.
The Chiquita Cold Chain Carrier of the Year Award is awarded based on performance in temperature-controlled services and takes into account number of shipments between August 2010 and July 2011 and efficiency of refrigerated loads.

Port of Quincy receives
support for expansion
More than 30 legislators (state and federal), businesses, organizations, and communities recently sent letters to the US Department of Transportation expressing support for a TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) Grant to expand the Port of Quincy Intermodal Terminal in Washington state.
The 32 letters of support request that the DOT award a TIGER Grant to the Port of Quincy for infrastructure improvements and to increase cargo and shipment capacity at the Port of Quincy Intermodal Terminal.

Berliner chooses automated
system of direct store delivery
Apacheta, a mobile workflow application vendor, and IntegraSys, a route accounting system provider, announced that Berliner Specialty Distributors is using their joint direct-store-delivery system to automate its sales and distribution processes.
Berliner, a Maryland-based ice cream, specialty, and natural frozen foods distributor, has deployed the IntegraSys-Apacheta system to its 25-plus route sales and delivery personnel.

ATA Truck Tonnage Index
continues climb in October
The American Trucking Associations’ advance seasonally adjusted (SA) For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index increased 0.5% in October 2011 after rising a revised 1.5% in September 2011. September’s increase was slightly less than the 1.6% gain ATA reported October 25, 2011. The latest gain put the SA index at 116.3 (2000=100) in October, up from the September level of 115.8.

Mitsubishi Fuso Truck of America Inc (MFTA) announced that JAMES S PEARY has returned from a post at Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC), Kawasaki, Japan, to become director, business operations for MFTA. MFTBC is MFTA’s parent company, and a part of the Daimler Truck Group. Peary, who joined MFTA in 1997 as director, corporate systems, was transferred to MFTBC in Japan in 2007, where he served concurrently as manager, business development for international aftersales and manager, parts marketing and sales for Europe/NAFTA/Oceania.

Container reefer unit boosts
efficiency, temperature control
Daikin Reefer has unveiled new container refrigeration technology that meets carrier and shipper demands for low energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions while providing precise cooling performance for chilled and frozen cargoes. The company is part of Daikin Refrigeration, a division of Daikin Industries Ltd.
The new LX10F container refrigeration unit, to be marketed under the brand name ZESTIA, uses Daikin’s patented DC inverter scroll compressor technology to deliver large energy savings of approximately 45% compared with other designs.

TRU emission regulations
Refrigerated Transporter recently put on a webinar entitled “California emissions regulations for transport refrigeration units.”
This webinar, with officials from the California Air Resources Board (CARB), covered all facets of CARB’s Airborne Toxic Control Measure for In-Use Diesel-Fueled Transport Refrigeration Units (TRU) and TRU genset regulations.
Particular attention was paid to how the phased-in compliance works, and to the various options for meeting engine performance standards.
There was also the opportunity for attendees to have their questions on the matter answered.
