Earth-Moving
Mini-excavator
Yanmar's model ViO35 mini-excavator is rated at 7,740 pounds with canopy and has an 11-foot maximum digging depth. Bucket changes facilitated with Yanmar's hydraulic quick-coupler system are designed to use many manufacturers' buckets. Bucket changes can be made quickly from the comfort of the extra-spacious operator's platform. Wall-hugging zero-tail swing, and left and right boom swing allow the unit to track adjacent to walls for maximum digging and trenching productivity. Large dozing blades coupled with Yanmar's VICTAS offset track design combine to provide side-to-side stability without increasing track width.

Backhoe loaders
Komatsu America announces the WB146-5 and the WB146PS-5 backhoe loaders with Tier 2 engine. Both machines have an operating weight range of 16,090 pounds with a large loader bucket of 1.25 cubic yards. The drivetrain includes a 4-speed synchro-shuttle transmission with standard 4-wheel drive for greater traction in soft soil applications. The WB146PS-5 includes a full power-shift transmission with twist-grip gear control. Designed with a one-piece welded mainframe for stability and durability, the new S-shaped backhoe boom is engineered narrower and stronger for increased lifting capacity, enhanced truck loading and breakout force.

    Product Spotlight
    Ice Harvest
Brad Nickel needs a versatile machine for his grape-growing operation.

Ice wine in recent years has taken the wine world by storm. Trouble is, ice wine grapes must be harvested during the iciest and stormiest time of year. But the lucrative premiums paid for ice wine make up for battling cold, snow, and investment in the harvesting technology required to bring those grapes to vintners.

One of the prime ice wine growing areas of North America is a Canadian region along the southwest shore of Lake Ontario called Niagara-on-the-Lake. It's a fertile farming and orchard area with soils perfect for wine grapes of all varieties. As a result, dozens of wineries have developed over the last generation along with a tourism industry partly spawned from nearby Niagara Falls.

On the shore of Lake Ontario, with the skyline of Toronto looming across the water, Brad Nickel positions his new Cat 257B multi-terrain loader equipped with rubber tracks between the rows of grapevines. His crews harvest the more typical fall grapes -- Cabernet, Merlot, Chardonnay, Champagne and Riesling. Harvest of the crisp, fruity and sweet ice wine won't happen until late-December and January. Nickel and his cousin Trevor Falk manage the 450-acre vineyard operation under the name Lakeview Harvesters Farms and also custom harvest for other wine growers. Their fathers, Arnold Nickel and Bill Falk, own the vineyard as well as a vineyard equipment specialty company called Lakeview Harvesters Inc.

    The right machine
When Nickel decided he needed a versatile utility machine to use around his farm and vineyard, he began a thorough research on every size and type of skid-steer loader on the market. Battlefield Equipment allowed Nickel an extensive demo with the 257B loader, which he decided to buy.

While he bought the rubber track machine with weather in mind, versatility was his primary goal. "This Cat is like a Swiss Army knife -- we use it for everything," he says. "It is used every single day." Not only does the 257B possess the capacity for hauling manure onto the vineyards during the growing season and loads of heavy grapes at harvest, its assortment of work tools keeps it running day in and day out. Nickel also pulls out orchard peach trees with it.

Equipped with a hydraulic quick coupler, Nickel and his team can switch from buckets to forks without leaving the cab. Various work tools also include a hydraulic auger, hydraulic post pounder, 72-inch Cat multi purpose (clam shell) bucket, and a specialized ice wine harvest net roller.

    Flotation minimizes damage
Nickel focused on a rubber-track machine because of the flotation it provides after rains and late-fall snows. He says the 257B holds its footing, which minimizes damage to the vineyard turf. Additionally, the unit's 5-foot, 6-inch width allows it to maneuver easily between vineyard rows. He adds, "The ride with this machine's suspended undercarriage system really is smooth and comfortable." Adding to that comfort is the enclosed cab and a ventilation system that keeps operators warm through the long nights of the ice wine harvest when grapes must be harvested at around 14 degrees.
