Mini-Excavators
Zero-swing
model
Takeuchi introduces the
TB138FR zero-swing model to its line of excavators. It features a
patented side-to-side offset boom system combined with a zero-tail swing
that allows the machine to turn 360 degrees. A low center of gravity
offers the stability and craning capabilities of conventional excavators
and the added functionality of working in confined areas. A tilt-up
operator's platform combined with a full-opening engine compartment
offers quick access for service and maintenance. An electrohydraulic
push-button and proportional slide switch located in the left-hand
joystick ensure precise control of the auxiliary hydraulic circuit.

Compact
excavators
Ranging in size from 3 to 5 metric tons, the new John Deere 35D (pictured) and 50D
zero-tail-swing compact excavators provide reduced cycle times; better
comfort with updated controls and cab; and lower operating costs with
the introduction of auto-idle and longer oil-change intervals. A new,
long arm and heavy counterweight option provides an additional foot of
dig depth and reach. Automatic shifting between high and low travel
speeds allows the machine to automatically shift into low when more
power is needed. The operator’s station is 5 inches wider and features
repositioned control levers and monitor for improved visibility.

new 17SR ACERA zero-tail-swing compact excavator designed with an
adjustable track gauge that gives easy maneuverability in tight spaces
without sacrificing stability when working. The 17SR also features a new
Smart Hydraulic System fueled by three pumps that ensure maximum power
for simultaneous lifting, swinging and travel operations, and
controllability for fine grading. The unit has a 15.2-hp,
three-cylinder, Tier 3-certified diesel engine.

Power Tools
Rotary
hammer
The BHE 20 IDR rotary hammer from Metabo features integrated dust
reduction technology to contain harmful airborne dust particles emitted
when drilling holes in masonry materials. This technology works in all
position, however, it is ideal for overhead drilling applications, such
as sprinkler and hung ceiling installation, where a device is needed to
protect the operator from harmful silica-bearing dust. The BHE 20 IDR is
rated up to ¾-inch diameter holes and offers a maximum impact rate of
4,900 bpm with single impact energy of 1.6 joules.

Grinder
The TEQ-Grind TG6V from Diteq
features a professional-grade 1,200-watt, 12-amp, variable-speed motor
and pistol grip for added comfort and convenience. The unit has a 6-inch
blade capacity and comes with a 5-inch DXT turbo diamond blade. The
grinder can be fit with Diteq’s patented Dustmuzzle dust containment
system, which meets pending OSHA guidelines and provides protection
against harmful air-borne particles.

Cordless
impact driver
Hitachi Power Tools
introduces the cordless 18-volt, 1.5Ah impact driver, the WH18DFL, which
combines the high torque of automotive wrenches with the precision of
traditional driver drills. The ¼-inch hex impact driver includes an
electric brake and is designed for fastening, driving and drilling
applications. The 1.5Ah lithium ion battery reduces the tool weight,
which is designed to lessen user fatigue and improve manageability in
awkward or overhead applications. Weighing 3.3 pounds, this impact
driver features a two-piece magnet motor with a tightening torque of
1,150 inch-pounds.

Product Spotlight
Mastclimbers
Helps Build New Nashville Skyline
When Bob Dylan recorded Nashville Skyline in 1969, the result was
described as ‘ground-breaking,’ and, as Mastclimbers LLC in Atlanta
continue to explore the true value and flexibility of the product,
‘ground-breaking’ is again the phrase that comes to mind.
“The extension to the existing Vanderbilt hospital is in a tight city
center environment, and since the original hospital was built, there
have been many building additions and traffic management changes, making
it impossible to erect anything from the ground up,” said Bobby Reese,
co-founder of Mastclimbers LLC. “We have ambulances racing out of the
ground level area and helicopters landing on the helipad on the roof,
and in between we had to provide façade access for the specialist
trades.”
The answer was to mount the mast climbers on an arrangement of support
beams, keeping everything 75 feet above the busy streets below.
“In addition to the ambulances and helicopter activity (the tower
crane had to stop operations when the helicopter was landing/taking off,
and it was a regular occurrence), there was only room on the job to
unload one truck at a time, and concrete drilling was prohibited after 8
a.m.,” said Steve Kunz, project manager for Mastclimbers. “There was
no viable solution for the provision of access on this job until we got
involved. The contractor, Alexander Metals, was delighted with the
result.”
“Balfour Beatty, the general contractor on the project needed access
to the external façade areas for multi-discipline contractors,” said
Kunz. “The key was to achieve this aim safely, while the hospital
continued its day-to-day business undisturbed.”
