Power Tools
Rotary hammer
Designed for interior or overhead drilling where dust exposure should be avoided, the 11250VSRD dust collection rotary hammer from Bosch Power Tools and Accessories is a lightweight and compact tool. The 7.4-pound rotary hammer features a 7.9-inch height, which is almost 3.5 inches shorter from top to bottom than other similar tools. The 6.1-amp rotary hammer delivers up to 1,000 rpm, 4,400 bpm and 1.8 foot-pounds of impact energy. The 11250VSRD features Bosch’s Micro Filter system and a two-fan design that captures a high volume of dust particles and reduces exposure to airborne dust. The company’s canister system is also designed to minimize dust leakage, even when the hammer is turned upside down. When it’s time for cleanup, the operator can remove the dust canister with one hand, and the Micro Filter can be removed for cleanup or replacement.

Angle grinder
www.metabo.com Metabo’s W8-115 Quick angle grinder features ‘cool flow’ technology with repositioned brushes for unrestricted airflow and a fan that pulls 35-percent more air through the tool to keep it running cooler during operation. The 4½-inch angle grinder features an 8-amp motor with 800 watts of power, 19.5 inch-pounds of torque and a no-load speed of 10,000 rpm. Weighing 6.2 pounds, this lightweight grinder features a secure racket grip and dual grip zones for comfortable and ergonomic handling.

Outdoor Power Equipment
Tractor loader backhoe
John Deere’s 110 tractor loader backhoe (TLB) features a 43-hp Yanmar diesel engine and the power and economy of direct fuel injection. The unit converts 75 percent of its net engine horsepower into hydraulic horsepower and the 110 TLB starts quickly even in cold weather. The lighter weight and shorter length of the unit makes it more maneuverable and easier to transport than larger construction units. The 110 TLB also features John Deere’s LoadMatch load sensing drive system that minimizes stalling and maximizes productivity.

Skid-mounted spot sprayers
TurfEx, a new product division of TrynEx International, introduces its line of skid-mounted spot sprayers. Designed to mount into the bed of any utility vehicle or pickup, the spot sprayers are suited for weed spraying, turf maintenance, tree and flower watering and pest control applications. The sprayers are available with a 50- or 100-gallon tank. Both units feature fully corrosion-resistant polyethylene tank construction, 50-foot hoses on 100-foot capacity manual-rewind hose reels and long spray wands with trigger actuation. Featuring 12-volt diaphragm pumps, the sprayers connect to the carrying vehicle’s electrical system for operation. The pumps move liquid at a rate of 5 gpm at 40 psi.

Motorized wheelbarrow
Compact Power introduces the Boxer 106 motorized 4-wheel drive wheelbarrow that is designed to move a variety of different materials for the construction, landscaping, utility and homeowner markets. The unit is powered by a Honda 5.5-hp gasoline engine and has four forward speeds and one reverse speed. The 106 has travel speeds up to 3.5 mph, which reduces labor cycle time and allows the user to move material twice as fast as with a traditional wheelbarrow, according to the manufacturer. It is designed to carry bulky loads in its 10-cubic-foot bucket, which has a carrying capacity of up to 850 pounds.

Generators
Combination light tower generator
Magnum Products introduces the MLT 4250 combination light tower and generator, which provides power generation ranging from single-phase prime 15 kW to three-phase prime 18 kW. The unit also produces 440,000 lumens of light, enough to illuminate up to 5 to 7 jobsite acres and has a fuel capacity sufficient to run more than 24 hours. The microprocessor controller simplifies operation with LED indicator lights, metering displays and seven engine safety warnings and shutdowns. A four-point outrigger/jack support stance assures maximum unit stability on rugged construction sites. The tubular-steel mast can extend up to 30 feet and has a 360-degree rotation with a locking system.

Diesel generators
Subaru introduces a new line of diesel generators powered by Hatz four-cycle, single-cylinder diesel engines. The RGD3300H uses a 6.8-hp Hatz 1B30 engine with a rate output of 3,000 watts, while the larger RGD5000H (pictured) uses a 9.9-hp Hatz 1B40 for a rated output of 5,000 watts. Both models have electric starters with recoil backup, while GFCI receptacles and fuseless circuit breakers protect the current level. Both models also include a full-power switch, voltmeter and 12-volt DC charging, as well as a spark arrestor that lessens both noise and ignition risk. Large 4.4-gallon fuel tanks allow for hours of continuous operation, while a low-oil shutdown system prevents damage to the engine should lubrication levels drop.

Understanding the Basics: How to Select the Right Engine-Driven Welder for the Job
By Eric Snyder, Lincoln Electric
Engine-driven welders are generally used when electric power isn’t available for arc welding. Usually these are outdoor applications. However, engine-drive welders are often used for indoor applications when it is not convenient to supply power to electric “plug-in” arc welders.

The basic considerations when choosing an engine-driven welder are:
• Application
• Engine Type
• Portability
• AC Generator Power

Application
When selecting an engine drive, the first thing to consider is the application. Ask yourself these five questions:
1. Is this new construction or a repair job? Also, what is the size of the project?
2. Is there a particular welding process you would like to use? You may want to stick with a process with which you feel most comfortable, or there may be a certain process required on the job.
3. Is this a pipe welding project? The equipment chosen needs to produce an arc suitable for this type of work.
4. Will the job require arc gouging? Arc gouging is repair work usually done in industrial jobs.
5. What type of material needs to be welded? Most of the time the material will be a common mild steel plate. However, if it’s aluminum, the welding will require different equipment.

Engine Type
Diesel, gasoline or liquid propane gas (LPG) are the choices. A diesel engine offers better fuel economy than a gasoline engine, and diesel fuel does not ignite as easily as gasoline. Another consideration for large jobs is whether the fuel is being supplied at the job site. If so, it is usually diesel, but whatever the fuel, the cost savings will usually determine the engine choice.

Gasoline engines are sometimes preferred in cold weather climates because they start more easily without extra starting aids, such as ether start kits and winterized fuel for colder weather.

LPG is much less common, but becomes an important alternative choice when diesel and gasoline exhaust emissions are not permitted for indoor applications.

Portability
Sometimes the need for portability will be the main factor in equipment selection. If an engine-driven welder needs to be carried or lifted to a work area, having a small gasoline stick welder will normally be the best answer.

AC Generator Power
AC power is sometimes required on the jobsite for grinding welds or lighting when working at night. Generally, 3,000 watts of AC generator power is plenty of power for these applications. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) are recommended and may be required. Powering an AC TIG welder or plasma cutter will require more wattage – typically 8,000 watts minimum.
