Any time first responders arrive at a scene, they should be aware of
their surroundings and constantly survey the scene for their own safety
and the well-being of others. An important thing to take into account
is the structural integrity of both standing buildings and those that
already have collapsed.

4. HHS Seeks Comments on Influenza
Guidances
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) seeks public
comment on its three recently released draft guidances designed to
protect the public from a possible influenza pandemic, including
guidelines for employers who plan to stockpile antiviral drugs.

5. IAFC Launches Technology Council
Initiative
The International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) recently created
the IAFC Technology Council to serve as a knowledge base for
technological developments that affect the fire and emergency services
and allied agencies.

6. OSHA Rejects Fire Prevention
Technology
A manufacturer that claims its technology could have prevented the
fatal Feb. 7 Imperial Sugar Refinery explosion in Port Wentworth, Ga.,
has been denied by OSHA a permanent variance on its patented fire
prevention technology. OSHA Administrator Edwin Foulke Jr. published an
interpretation letter clarifying the agency’s position.
