1. ISEA Announces Public Review for First Aid, Smoke Hood Standards
The International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA) recently announced the availability of draft revisions to its voluntary consensus standards for workplace first aid kits and air-purifying respiratory protective smoke escape devices.

2. 2009 Safety, Health and Survival Week Theme Announced
The International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) announced the theme “Protect Yourself: Your Safety, Health and Survival Are Your Responsibility” for the 2009 Safety, Health and Survival Week, scheduled for June 14-20.

3. IAFC Reaffirms Its Position Opposing Public Safety Consolidation
The International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) board of directors issued a position statement reaffirming the association’s continued opposition to consolidating fire and emergency service and law enforcement agencies and the creation of public safety officers. The measure comes in response to a growing trend of some consultants to push consolidation as a remedy for local government officials faced with shrinking local budgets.

4. Report: Nation Not Ready for Pandemic Flu
The Committee on Homeland Security released a majority staff report examining the nation’s state of preparedness and response capabilities in the event of a pandemic influenza outbreak. The report identifies current weaknesses and provides recommendations for what Congress, the incoming administration and the public and private sectors can do to achieve national readiness to combat this threat.

5. Fall Protection and Confined Spaces
OSHA maintains that confined spaces exist in virtually every industry and many workers may come into contact with one during the course of their work. One of the most important aspects of confined space safety and rescue is fall protection.
