1. Advances in Firefighting Showcased at
Annual Spring School
The Texas Engineering Extension Service's (TEEX) Annual Summer Fire
Training School, held each July at Brayton Fire Training Field, is the
most publicized and recognized 3 weeks in the training calendar. But
this week, another part of the annual school program – albeit
significantly smaller – is bringing emerging technologies to the
forefront of firefighting.

3. Floodplain Managers Call for an Independent
FEMA
The Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM) recommends that
the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) be restored to its former
independent-agency status, with direct access to the president.

4. NLC Offers Emergency Management Training to
Local Officials
In the wake of recent disasters such as Hurricanes Rita and Katrina
and the Minneapolis bridge collapse, the National League of Cities (NLC)
has created the NLC-Emergency Management Training Program to provide
in-depth emergency management training to local officials.

5. Paws of Life Foundation Continues Placement
of Search and Rescue Canines
True to the adage that dogs are man’s best friend, Karen Frazier
of West Paducah, Ky., recently received an Australian Shepherd named
Briar from Paws of Life Foundation. Frazier is a member of Little Egypt
Search and Rescue of Carbondale, Ill., a volunteer group of individuals
and canines providing assistance in the event of lost or missing
individuals in southern Illinois and surrounding areas.
