3. DOJ Settles Lawsuit Alleging Firefighter
Hiring Discrimination in Portsmouth, Va.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced March 25 that it has
entered into a consent decree with the City of Portsmouth, Va., that, if
approved by the court, will resolve the complaint that the city engaged
in a pattern or practice of employment discrimination against African
Americans in its hiring of entry-level firefighters, in violation of
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII).

5. NIST Conducts Stairwell Evacuation Study
Most of the time, people use the stairs in buildings – especially
in high-rise structures – only as a backup for faster elevators and
escalators. During a fire or other emergency, however, stairs become the
primary passage to survival. In a new study, researchers at the National
Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) examined what is known
about how stairs work as an emergency evacuation route. Their answer?
Not nearly enough.

6. New Program Evaluates Labs for Emergency
Communications Tests
To help ensure that first responders, public safety officers and
military personnel can always talk with each other no matter what
communications equipment they are using, the National Institute of
Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Department of Homeland Security
(DHS) have teamed up to create a program to help ensure the
interoperability of communications equipment.
