1. GAO Reports Bomb-Making Materials Smuggled
Past Guards in Federal Buildings
Some folks at the Federal Protection Service, the group charged with
protecting federal buildings, are a little red in the face, following a
Government Accountability Office (GAO) report outlining how
investigators smuggled bomb-making materials into federal buildings. The
investigators even assembled the "bombs" on the premises.

according to a study by a University of Texas at Austin researcher.

Portal Monitors, Better Technology Needed
Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joe
Lieberman, I-Conn., says a new report questioning the effectiveness of
next-generation radiation portal monitors means the Department of
Homeland Security's (DHS) must develop better technology to prevent
terrorists from smuggling nuclear weapons across our borders.

4. GAO Report Finds Federal Agencies' Flu
Preparedness "Uneven," Recommends Monitoring
In testimony before a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental
Affairs subcommittee on June 16, Bernice Steinhardt, director of
strategic issues at the Government Accountability Office (GAO), said
some federal agencies are not fully prepared for a possible flu pandemic
and recommended that the Department of Homeland Security monitor and
report on agencies' readiness.

5. CSB: ConAgra Explosion Likely Caused by
Natural Gas
Based upon its ongoing investigation of the fatal June 9 ConAgra
Foods explosion, the U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) said the blast
likely was caused by natural gas that may have been purged into the
building during a water heater installation.
