1. Emergency Managers Join Emergency Preparedness Drills Scheduled for Sept. 11
The International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) USA Council will participate in emergency communication drills and shelter in place drills on Sept. 11 as part of a national campaign encouraging organizations to rehearse what they would do during a natural disaster or other form of emergency.

2. DHS Secretary Napolitano and FEMA Administrator Fugate Unveil New Ads to Encourage Emergency Preparedness
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano joined with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Craig Fugate and the Ad Council to launch a new series of Ready Campaign public service advertisements (PSAs) designed to encourage all Americans to take steps to prepare for emergencies, kicking off September’s National Preparedness Month.

When a chlorine gas leak sent two to the hospital, first responders depended on protective clothing and respirators to save their lives.

4. American Red Cross Wants You to ‘Do More Than Cross Your Fingers’ to Prepare for Emergencies
A new survey shows that while about half of Americans have experienced a significant emergency, many people still are not ready for the unexpected because they do not know what to do. In fact, only about 12 percent of Americans are ready for an emergency.

5. Two Firefighters Perish in Buffalo, N.Y., Fire
Two Buffalo, N.Y., firefighters lost their lives in the early morning hours of Aug. 24 while fighting a three-alarm fire in a convenience store. According to reports, Lieutenant Charles (Chip) McCarthy and firefighter Jonathan Croom were attempting to save a person believed to be trapped inside the building when the floor collapsed and they fell into the basement.

6. Exposure to World Trade Center Attack Linked to New Cases of Asthma, PTSD
Large numbers of recovery and rescue workers, nearby residents and office workers who experienced intense or prolonged exposure to the World Trade Center attack have reported new diagnoses of asthma or post-traumatic stress 5-6 years after the attack.
