EMS Responders
OSHA issued the guidance document Best Practices for Protecting EMS
Responders During Treatment and Transport of Victims of Hazardous
Substance Releases to address adequate training and PPE for emergency
medical services responders who assist victims of hazardous substance
release incidents.

2. CDC Examines Antimony Toxicity Outbreak in
Firefighters
Following an analysis of 65 firefighters, the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) concluded that wearing fabric containing
antimony oxides is not connected with elevated concentrations of urinary
antimony, according to the Nov. 27 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report
(MMWR).

3. IAFC, IAFF Support Fire Service-Based EMS
The International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and the
International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) on Nov. 2 reaffirmed
their support for fire service-based emergency medical service and urged
public officials to support all efforts to broaden emergency medical
care and ambulance transport by the fire service to better protect the
public.

4. Coalition Calls for Improved Chemical Plant
Safety
Corresponding with the 25th anniversary of the Bhopal, India,
disaster, a coalition of labor and environment groups called for
increased safety at U.S. chemical plants through improved processes and
reduced onsite hazardous chemical storage.

5. GHS: What You Need to Know
On Sept. 30, acting Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA Jordan
Barab announced a proposed rule to align OSHA’s Hazard Communication
Standard (hazcom standard) with provisions of the United Nations
Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals
(GHS).
