Architectural Design Trends in Higher Education
Higher-education enrollment is on the rise, fueled by the addition of traditional full-time students and of non-traditional students such as part-timers and distance-education enrollees. This upward trend is driving schools to not only upgrade existing facilities but to also build new ones. According to Reed Construction Data, construction spending on education facilities is forecast to increase 11.7 percent in 2007. Growth is led by states such as Texas, which, in July 2006, passed a bill that would allocate $1.9 billion for construction development at its colleges and universities. The positive growth has spilled over into the architectural design community where the higher education market now accounts for 7.7 percent of 2005 billings (according to the American Institute of Architects Business of Architecture: 2006 AIA Firm Survey). more>>

Allegany College of Maryland Creates Virtual Classrooms with HaiVision's hai1000 MPEG-4 AVC H.264 Multi-stream Codecs
Allegany College of Maryland has selected and deployed the hai1000 MPEG-4 AVC H.264 multi-stream codec system to unite educators and students across its three campuses. The hai1000 is manufactured by HaiVision Systems of Montreal. HaiVision's products are used in telepresence suites and boardroom videoconference systems worldwide, as well as in educational facilities for distance education. The hai1000 is the world's premier system for multi-stream low latency audio visual connectivity as required within telepresence suites and virtual classroom environments. Using MPEG-4 AVC (also known as H.264), the hai1000 saves 60 percent of the bandwidth typically required for DVD-quality transmission using MPEG-2 technology. more>>
