Coming Home to Windows Home
Server, Part 11
By Jason Bovberg
I've been writing about my experiences with
Windows Home Server for over a year now, and I'm still amazed by how
well this new platform has taken off. With the exception of the "corruption
problem" (which really only plagued a few users), it has been smooth
sailing. If you read last
month’s column, you know that WHS has even saved me from
catastrophe. Simply put, WHS is a terrific product.
This month, I want to take a step back and provide an overview of some
of the WHS buzz that I’ve been tracking (e.g., on blogs, with the WHS
Team, with friends). None of these topics is yet ready for a full-blown
column, but they’re interesting enough for brief commentary. Here goes

Sonos System Expands Channels
and Software
“We’re doing quite well with the CEDIA channel,”
says Sonos president and COO Phil Abram, who was in New York last week
to discuss the latest upgrades to the Sonos platform. It’s no secret
why Sonos is getting more looks from custom installers these days. The
multiroom audio system, which operates over a meshed network combining
802.11 b/g radios and proprietary Sonos software, is easy enough for a
tech-savvy consumer to install, and that makes it a fast in/fast out
proposition for custom installers targeting the retrofit channel. more>>

Standard Basement Transforms
Into State-of-the-art Home Theater
Auralex Acoustics recently played an integral
role in the extraordinary transformation of a standard, family-style
basement, complete with work-out gear and foosball table, into an
impressive custom-built, high-tech home theater. Indiana-based custom
electronics integrator and dealer TriPhase Technologies worked with
interior designer Shanna Haecker of Universal Design Group to renovate
the Indianapolis space and create a trendy, state-of-the-art residential
entertainment zone, where the family could enjoy movies and sporting
events.
To make the concept a reality, Auralex worked with TriPhase and
Universal Design to develop the initial design, loudspeaker placement,
and treatment layout. The space, which is long and narrow with low
ceilings, offered the team several challenges they needed to overcome.
For instance, the room featured three large windows that the homeowners
wanted to keep intact in order to preserve the home’s exterior look
and appeal. To get around this issue, the team decided to build a wall
in front of the windows that would not only cover the windows but would
also conceal subwoofers and deeper acoustical treatments. more>>

Sooloos Ensemble System Stores,
Manages and Socializes Music Collections
The new Sooloos Ensemble home entertainment
system stores, manages, distributes and presents detailed information
about music collections and artists, in a way that is fun and social for
the user.
Two key pieces of hardware make up a Sooloos Ensemble System. The
Sooloos Control:One is a 17in. commercial-grade touchscreen with a USB
port for uploading digital files and a CD tray for ripping music from
pre-purchased discs. Once a collection is saved on the server, the
Control:One also provides the user experience of browsing through music
collections by cover art, artist, alphabetical order, genre, release
date and a number of other options. The second piece of hardware is the
Sooloos Ensemble Server. This storage and management device holds up to
a terabyte of imported audio and metadata information (cover art,
production credits, etc.) and acts as the distribution hub for sharing
music throughout a house. more>>
