Market Opening in Connected
Home Service
By Rebecca Day
Who will provide support in the connected home is a simmering debate
among service providers, according to panelists at the recent Future of
Television conference in New York. The convergence of PC, TV, and
software-based services are creating a rocky landscape that no one has
figured out how to traverse.
Service and tech support are a “train wreck” waiting to happen,
according to Brian Whitton, executive director of access technologies at
Verizon’s Fiber Optics Services (FiOS) group. “If a consumer calls
Verizon because they lost content on their PC, how are you going to
answer?” he says. “You don’t.”

Coming Home to Windows Home
Server, Part 12
By Eric B. Rux
I’ve asked this question before: How do you use your
WHS system in your home or your business? How has it changed the way you
deal with data on your PC and in your network? Are you able to access
your data in new and exciting ways? Doug and Heather Jacobson of
Northwest Gift Company and Steamboat Productions sat down with me last
week to discuss their experience with WHS. It was an interesting
discussion that helped me understand how WHS can help a small business.

Attic Home
Theater
The theater was to be installed in the attic space directly over the
master bedroom. The homeowner contractually required the noise floor in
the master bedroom not increase more than 6dB (NC) with the theater
playing at reference volume. The bigger challenge in the project was
structural. We had to remove the roof from the home, change the gable,
relocate mechanical equipment, and provide additional foundation
supports. The control system is a Crestron AV2Pro based system with a
STX-1700CXP color two-way touchpanel. The Crestron system integrates
with three Lutron six-zone Grafik Eyes and the home’s security system.
There were various requirements to signal alarm status in the theater
during its use.
